Well that is devastating’ I hadn’t see the post , but my friend shared the press release with me because she knew I was applying to Fulbright-Hays and I’m a heritage speaker.

Here's to hoping that this was not an across-the-board approach to the evaluation and not every evaluator deducted those points (though, obviously, this absolutely sucks/is deeply unfair to this particular applicant.) I'm so sorry you have to deal with this additional uncertainty/stress on top of the normal application stress. :(

I haven’t gotten my results back yet. Under the agreement for this year I shouldn’t get all points deducted, but we’ll have to wait and see what happens. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I haven’t received results yet. However, I’m a heritage speaker and I wasn’t aware. Neither were my university Fulbright-Hays coordinator or my advisor who was a previous Fulbright recipient.

There is someone on twitter who shared that they did get 15 points deducted in this cycle for this reason. Did you see this tweet:

For anyone who is a heritage speaker and got points deducted for that see this press release by the New Civil Liberties Alliance.

This is so f'ed up and structurally discourages communities being studied/engaged by their own community members. I cannot believe points--so many points!!!--are actively deducted for native speakers. Is this widely known, or does this just come up unexpectedly when people get their review forms back? Thank you for sharing this press release.

  4. Such a frustrating wait! They had said they would send out announcements in early September in an email forwarded by our dean, but perhaps they define that range of dates differently than the rest of us. All that to say: no word over here! I also checked G5, in case there was an update in the portal, but my application status is still "submitted."

Well, it turns out that unfortunately this year's fellows will actually be the last. The Mellon foundation has stopped funding the program. For clarity, if you applied this year, you can still win funding. But there will be no application this fall or thereafter.

    Here's the announcement: https://www.ssrc.org/programs/idrf/idrf-announcement/

What a shame! Thank you for alerting us to this. I hadn't yet seen it.

Does anyone know when the results will be sent out? Is it typically the Monday of the second week of April or do we think it might be today?

  6. I just checked the SSRC application portal and my application says "Finalist Submission" now and there is an option to upload a transcript...so I think that means I am a finalist, though I did not receive any email update.
