  1. I can only speak to the Georgia Tech application, as it was the only PhD app that was co-mingled with the MBA app. There were 3 or 4 additional essays, and one of them was "if you could invite any 4 people to dinner, who would you invite, and what would you want to discuss." I had a similar question on an undergrad app years ago, but have not seen one anywhere else.

Just to make things worse, NOW (around december 15) they updated their application form allowing to upload documents. As if getting and mailing transcripts were so easy and cheap... I also loathed their 2000 characters limit for the SoP.

My kudos for Minnesota. ApplyYourself made things easier and the secretary I contacted was most helpful.

  2. An interesting way of going around ETS' stupidity is if you have already submitted an application and you can check the status. In my case Texas allowed me to see my score (sent on November 6) on November 9, while ETS website only allowed me to see it on 18.

  3. Hi,

I am an international student applying to PhD programs in the US. Some universities say that they do not require a TOEFL score from international students who studied at universities where the language of instruction is English. I suppose this includes the English speaking universities outside English speaking countries. I am studying at a university where English is the language of instruction. Does this mean it is absolutely OK not to submit a TOEFL score, or should I still send a score to strengthen my application?

Each school has its own policies. Some might waive the TOEFL score, some might not. You have to check.
