  1. Could be either one, but most likely hardware. The laptop should have an RF kill switch, which disables the antenna. From the Setup guide picture the switch is on the front (http://download.leno...pdf/42w9980.pdf).Then I guess there is also the fn+f5 combination which can be used to disable the card. I would make sure it's not disabled through either of these.

You can check that the card is recognized and working properly in device manager. If it's not disabled, then maybe the card or the antennae were damaged. In the worst case, replacing a card with a different mini-PCI card is only $40-50. Replacing the antennae would be more tedious, but should also be pretty inexpensive. Lenovo has guides on how to take the laptop apart to do that. To access the card, very little need to removed, I think (only a few screws and a backplate).

    Thanks a lot.

I checked the fn+f5, and under "wireless communication" the bluetooth connection is on, but the 802.11 wireless connection is off even though the wireless connection indicator light at the bottom of the screen is on. I tried clicking "open" at the fn+f5 panel but the 802.11 wireless connection label is still gray (the bluetooth label is shining green)

  2. Hi.

My Thinkpad X61 suddenly cannot find any wireless device. It happened when I was downloading an antivirus trial version at school yesterday. It simply cannot locate any wireless device when I do "search for wireless ". I thought the school's network was down. But when I went home and put it next to the Verizon router, it stil says "cannot find network" when I clicked "search for WLAN". All WLAN configurations are correct (with non-key at my school and 10 digit WEP key at my home). But the signal itensity is 0%, with a "not assigned IP address". I clicked the link "help me solve this problem" and under "connection status" it says "error code 007, chosen wireless network out of range or inaccessible, please move to a closer position and retry". This is wrong because all my roomate's and labmate's computers have excellent wireless connections at home and school.

My question is, is it a software problem or a hardware malfunction? I need help!

I am doing research, and without a laptop that can go online is completely frustrating.

    Thanks

  3. sure, the number of softwares being available for a mac is increasing, but that is mainly true for general softwares. most programs used in research (mainly in the sciences, i don't know in other fields) aren't usually available in mac. and the ones that are cut a deep hole in your pocket. i saw that you are in 'biological sciences', and from the perspective of a geneticist/systemicist/population biologist/ecologist, i can say that mac is not the smartest choice. i do use mac and unix boxes in our lab because the department bought them for us, but they have less than 10% of the total programs i run. as some people said above, if you run a lot of windows based programs, then getting a mac isn't really a good idea. you don't want to make the trip all the way from your home to the lab just because the program you want to use is in the pc in your lab.

in your case, you can simply get a replacement battery. also consider the new lenovo thinkpads.. they look loaded. if you want to switch platforms, the main problem you will have is getting used to the new system, but this won't be much of a problem. if there are certain programs that are mac-specific, you might want to look at how to dual boot your machine with a unix OS. most developers who release programs for mac also release unix/linux versions (at least in biology).

as for those who think macs don't get infected by a virus, that isn't actually true. the frequency of attacks is super-super-low. but the idea of macs being invulnerable to viruses is a myth.

I am studying molecular and cellular biology, to be more specific, microbiology

  4. I have been using my Lenovo Thinkpad X61 for 5 years (haven't done any repairment during the 5 years). Recently my battery is giving me a problem, it suddenly dropped from 64% electricity to 4% electricity.

In another occasion when I was attempting to recharge the battery. It stopped at 39% for a long time, then it suddenly skyrocketed to 100% after 10-20 minutes.

I am a first year PhD student, so either I would like my computer to be fully repaired or buy a new one.

What are the good laptops to consider in United States? PC or apple?

I have been using PC all the time but I know PC gets a lot of computer virus

I've heard machintosh laptops are really good, but a lot of softwares can't be installed on Mac. Besides, macbooks are pretty expensive.

    What's your choice?

    Thanks.

    Plz don't delete this topic.

  5. What sort of job do you want? I would venture that viral replication experience is more valuable in the pharmaceutical industry. In academia, I don't know.

I'm interested to hear what people think about this. I'm going with bacteriology or bust ;) (biofuel focus)

My rotations are over and I need to decide which lab to join, it would be either a microbiology lab or virology lab.

  6. My thought would be microbiology, but that is only because there are so many at my school.

Well, my current position is I'm about to finish all my rotations and need to decide a lab to join, it would be either a microbiology lab or virology lab.

And my research project could be:

studying the genetic mechanism behind microbiology pathogenesis

    or

studying the specific mechanism of virus replication

So I need to think further before making decision.

  7. Microbiology and Virology, which field offers better chance in finding a job?

I know this question is too board, since there are a lot of branch areas in microbiology and virology.

But I would like to know the general picture of these two fields: which one is more promising?

Perhaps I should make it more detailed:

studying the genetic mechanism behind microbiology pathogenesis

    or

studying the specific mechanism of virus replication

  10. Hi.

Does anyone has a clue about how to study Biochemistry (Nucleic Acids)?

I am a new grad student, and I totally have no idea of how to deal with this course for my first semester.

I mean my knowledge about biology is ok, but when it comes to structures, thermodynamics.....I used to hate Chemistry in my high school and undergraduate years.

Does anyone who doesn't have strong chemistry background also feeling the same as me?
