If I were you, and everything specially funding was the same, I would go for UBC because of its location, and better potential job opportunities.
Better job opportunities because there are more high tech companies in Canada and USA? (I suspect it's easier to get a job in Silicon Valley with a Canadian, rather than an European one)

Anyone to give more insight? Both schools seem to have good job prospects (with much higher salaries and cost of living in Zurich) and have good vision/machine learning people working there.

And so the weekend passed and I got to call the graduate assistant... to many international applicants, bla bla bla. Well At least I won't be waiting for Canadian decisions anymore. Already was accepted to Waterloo. Any of you can give me some info about UW reputation on applied math? It has a very strong reputation in Mexico, but I wish to know how Canadians view it.
Is this UofT? The graduate assistant for the math department? Does this mean that only rejections will follow ?

Someone submitted an acceptance today to /survey, so maybe the decisions are coming soon ...
-
I'm in the same boat. Also, if you check the survey page there're only 2 people that applied to MSc and got a decision (some of them were rejected by mail tho!).
-
Anyone knows when Toronto will send out the final decisions regarding the MSc program? Still nothing ...
-
Offtopic: you were notified by e-mail or snailmail? Congrats on the admit, UofT is a great school
-
Is it okay if I contact the group I applied to if the decision has been already made? Still haven't heard anything from the university. How will this be received by them - as me nagging them? Can it have a negative impact on the application?.

I saw on the survey page that some people have already gotten a reply (for PhD, only 2 for MSc). Does anyone know if they are done with sending out admits for the MSc program, or are they usually late (last year they sent out rejections around 14-15 Feb) ?
-
Got an admit in the beginning of Feb, I know at least two more who got admits around that time as well.
-
Presumably, yes... I heard from a prof in ECE that they had ended the decision makeing period. They will provide around 20-30k for newly admitted students and the number of students in ECE admitted is about the same number as last year's. So, please wait for a week or so and see what happens.
I applied for CS, I hope it's different ...

Congrats to all got admits!!! It's really nice to have a separate thread specifically for MS ads
So far, I got ads from UPenn Robotics MSE and Princeton CS MSE and I'm still waiting for UCLA, UIUC, Columbia and Stanford. All are MS programs. I'm short of research experiences, so mostly I applied for MS (already seen the debts I have to pay...)
Does any one know any of those schools I'm waiting for has done their admission?
I'm from U of Toronto and my prof told me there were some new policies imposed by Canadian government to restrict the number of admissions for international grad students. I think it is probably due to financial issues since all MS/PhD grad students are supplied with funding. By now, most CS programs I know have made their decisions and there are short waitlists. The results are supposed to be out very soon. Sorry, not sure about Eng programs.
Does this mean that if I didn't get an e-mail from UofT so far I am either waitlisted or rejected?

Got an admit from UBC (either MS or PhD, my choice, funded), but still no answer from Toronto ...
-
I heard from Toronto (rejection) last year in mid February and I think UBC sent out their results in Feb/March last year. So you have some more waiting to do
I'm sorry to hear that, I wish you more luck this time. Damn, I'll have to wait a bit more then .. Thanks for your answer!

Anyone heard anything from Toronto/UBC ?

Hello,
I want to apply to Uni Toronto for a MS in CS. The GRE is not required, but it's stated that it is recommended. As this is the only school that recommends it (I apply to European schools mostly), I don't think that paying 160$ will justify the possible advantage it can give me. Do you think there is a big difference if you don't submit GRE scores? I have a very good GPA, recommendation letters and some work/research experience.

Or Cambridge? The ML department seems to be very fruitful, according to the number of papers they have published.

Thank you! What about UCSD/UC Toronto/Johns Hopkins? Any opinion on that?

I am interested in pursuing a career in Machine Learning. The problem is that, at the moment I am not quite sure if I want to make a 5 year PhD commitment. It might happen that I can find full funding for a MSc degree if I go for it. Can someone please share their opinion on the Machine Learning departments in the following universities
1) Berkeley
2) Stanford
3) Columbia
4) Princeton
5) University College London (they have the Gatsby unit and so on)
Later added:
6) CMU
7) UCSD
8) UC Toronto
If you think that some university should be on the list but it isn't, please share (including European !) Also, I am interested if after a MSc I can directly take the qualification exam, rather than taking classes again for 2 more years .What is the usual procedure in the US?
MSc: ETH Zurich or UBC ?

Thanks for the replies everyone. More specifically for machine learning, I know that UBC has some very strong people, but I can't say the same thing for ETHZ. Anyone has a more informed opinion?
