Wow, imagine the strength you need to wait until the very end to hear back, but good for your friend! I also think that what you're saying might be true, in which case I would like to know not because I'd be hoping for an acceptance, but because that would at least be an indicator that I have a relatively strong application. THAT would be really good to know.

Thank you @wanlichangcheng! I was told by a former Princeton EAS PhD graduate that the EAS Department always does interviews, so I always had that in mind and thought that no interview was a direct sign of a rejection. Bu then I thought to myself, she started her program there ten years ago, so it's not impossible that things have changed a bit since. Based also on historical data as well as on information I could gather from other places, my conclusion is that every department at every institution operates differently and there's no way for us to know anything for sure! Like nothing! That's why only those final confirmations (whether acceptances or rejections) can give us the only accurate answers. I'm applying for Early China and because of that my options are very limited, both in terms of universities and potential advisors, so yes, expectations are kept as low as possible. And yes, the poor civil service aspirants of the past definitely had it much harder than we do, if things don't work out we at least have other options in life besides academia, whereas many of them were pretty much unequivocally focused on that one direction. Good luck to you too! Patience and ease of mind!

Continuing the CU Boulder thread, I also just received an email asking me if I would be interested in the MA program instead of the PhD and to set up a short Zoom interview with the faculty "to get to know me a little bit better". @Beijing Koala and @BanjaraSoul In the emails you received, did they specifically say it would be a funded MA? Or did they only tell you that after you asked? I have heard before that they do offer TA positions to all incoming MA students and I have indeed submitted the TA application, but I just want to be extra cautious.

Congratulations for receiving the offer! Based on what I talked about with my POI before applying, it seems that they're mainly offering MA positions even if we are applying for PhDs, so that's not unusual. And it's probably for the best, their department is really tiny and I don't think a PhD there is really that feasible.

Anyone heard back from University of Colorado Boulder? I saw the one post on GC about an acceptance on Jan 23. Since I see so many international students, I'm now starting to think if some schools contact them earlier as they would need more time to prepare afterwards. Or obviously I'm probably just trying to make up excuses for not hearing anything back ?

Hello everyone! This is my first time applying to a doctoral program and I don't personally know anyone else doing it this year, so just seeing other people listing some of the same universities as myself is amazing! My main interest is Early China and I've applied to Princeton, University of Colorado Boulder and University of Washington. Have not heard back from any of them (UW doesn't do interviews, I know Princeton does them, not sure about CU Boulder). The first part was just me saying hi. The following section is just some random thoughts: I don't know anything about how this works, but thinking of my interest and seeing @BanjaraSoul's and @Beijing Koala's interests, I wonder: although it's the same department we're applying to, wouldn't there be different review committees for different tracks? Just here we already have three different tracks (Japanese literature, Modern Chinese Literature, Early China) and surely there are even more. And if there are different committees, their review and decision timelines might be different... but then again, I think of the faculty at places like CU Boulder and UW, and considering how few people they have, I guess it would be impossible to form different committees... A place like Princeton could do that though. So far, I have only seen the two posts on GC about interviews at Princeton, one posted Dec 30 and the other Jan 4. Does anyone know (either personally or from other places) of anyone else receiving interview invitations? And yes @BanjaraSoul, let's keep each other some more company during this period! We might all be in different time zones, I'll just post mine here for reference: US Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8). Hope to see more posts here, any random chat will warm my heart!
