  1. Hi, guys! Just writing to inform you that  yesterday I have received my rejection from Upenn. Now, all my results are out and nothing is left. If all works well..I will be joining CU Boulder on Fall 2023. If anyone else here is also going to Boulder, please let me know because I would love to get in touch with you. Thanks to all of you for helping me to get through all these months of waiting without freaking out!! Wishing luck to all of you!!!

  2. Hi, there! Hope you are going great despite the nervousness of these days. Just writing to update that I just got my rejection from Princeton University (EAS). And yesterday, another rejection from UC Davis (Comp Lit). Now only one left, but at least, I got one acceptance and that is all we need, right? Good luck to all of you!

  3. Hi, guys. Just to keep you updated: yesterday night ( I am in South America) I received a rejection email from Umich - Asian Languages and Cultures program. It is a very interesting program, but I really did not feel I was a fit for it due to my research topic. Just now I checked on the portal and saw few rejections from the same program. Now more 3 results are to come. Fingers crossed!!

Out of curiosity, does anyone know how common it is (or isn't!) to be accepted to a program without an interview? I imagine that it's unlikely as funding a Ph.D. student is an expensive investment for the department.

Also, does anyone know how late the "interview season" goes? Again I imagine that it's probably pretty variable, as some programs don't seem to release results until some time in March.

As February approaches I'm increasingly concerned about the lack of any contact from my programs haha

I also would like to know which parameters they use to choose whom to interview. Also if they interview all candidates, which I believe it is near to impossible depending on the program. IHope we can hear from the remaining universities on the first week of Feb!!

Continuing the CU Boulder thread, I also just received an email asking me if I would be interested in the MA program instead of the PhD and to set up a short Zoom interview with the faculty "to get to know me a little bit better".

@Beijing Koala and @BanjaraSoul In the emails you received, did they specifically say it would be a funded MA? Or did they only tell you that after you asked? I have heard before that they do offer TA positions to all incoming MA students and I have indeed submitted the TA application, but I just want to be extra cautious.

Well...in the e-mail I received it was mentioned "TA ship" (tuition fee + insurance+ stipend). And I guess on their website they also mention that the MA program is fully funded, if I not mistaken.

@BanjaraSoul @Justanotheraspirant Hey guys! Congrats for BanjaraSoul.

In the email I received, my POI did mention that they will consider giving me a funded MA position. Just like Justanotheraspirant, I was also scheduled for an interview. They said that they were unable to admit PhD students this year, and I'm just guessing that @Justanotheraspirant you will also be considered as a funded MA.

I'm not sure if I will be able to do my MA again in the US, so still waiting for other PhD offers. Good luck to you all

Thank you, Beijing Koala! Regarding the funded MA position, if we check the UCBoulder department website we can see that most of the students doing their MA are appointed as TA or RA. Only 2 or 3 are  PhD students or candidates. I am not sure about the reason, but maybe they admit students only for MA positions at first?

I heard back with an acceptance from USC! I am so happy that I am able to relax now for the rest of the application cycle and just take what comes my way.

Best of luck to everyone and I will continue to post results and contribute here so that everyone has much information as possible!

Congratulations!!! Yes....it is a real peace of mind having at least one acceptance, right? I also allowing myself to relax while waiting for the other results to come. By the way....are you in the Japanese or Chinese track?

My CU Boulder POI emailed me few days ago, asking if I will accept a funded MA position rather than a PhD one.  I replied yes, but she didn't check my email yet, not sure how this is going on....

Hi, Beijing Koala! I also received an email from CU Bolder with the same contents. Although I was looking for admission to their PhD course, I was offered MA position instead. However, when I attended their info sessions, I kinda felt that they really seem not to accept people directly into the PhD. I might be wrong though, but that is the impression I had. Anyways....I am very glad, but I am also eager to know about the other results!!!

Hi, Beijing Koala!!  I also haven´t heard from any of the programs yet. Except for Princeton which seems to be interviewing prospective candidates, the others are still silent. I guess things will spice up from the end of Jan until Mid Feb. I continue to be optmistic. Let´s see how it will go when time passes. (hehe). Best of luck to both of us!!!

I received a rejection letter from UChicago,Maph today and they said I was rejected because of my language scores, which is not a surprise to me.

    Good luck to everyone!

Oh....I am sorry to hear that. Actually, that is the main reason I gave up on applying to ALC- UChicago. It was in my top list, I had even contacted one professor with whom I would like to work with, but when my TOEFL results came out, I realized I was 5 points behind what is required for admission to the program. Then, just to make sure I messaged the department and they told me that if I was admitted, my admission would be conditioned upon my TOEFL scores and for that reason, I would need to retake the test. Since I had already spent lots of money on all application fees, document translations, and proficiency tests, I decided to give up on UChicago. Also, even if I got admitted, it would be such a nerve-wracking situation sitting for TOEFL once again and that also just to increase mere 5 points. So I saved myself from the stress...(hehe).

Hi!! Regarding your random thought of:

"I don't know anything about how this works, but thinking of my interest and seeing @BanjaraSoul's and @Beijing Koala's interests, I wonder: although it's the same department we're applying to, wouldn't there be different review committees for different tracks? " ...

Well...I was also wondering the same. Regarding to UC Boulder, it seems the ALC department is not that big and during the info session I took part last year, they also mentioned that. But that info session was specifically for ALC-Japanese Ph.D. aspirants. The Chinese department might be bigger though and they seem to have more Ph.D. students for Chinese than Japanese as I´ve noticed.

"So far, I have only seen the two posts on GC about interviews at Princeton, one posted Dec 30 and the other Jan 4. Does anyone know (either personally or from other places) of anyone else receiving interview invitations?"

No...I do not even know anyone else in my country applying to ALC. That´s the reason I came to Gradcafe. (hehe)

And yes @BanjaraSoul, let's keep each other some more company during this period! We might all be in different time zones, I'll just post mine here for reference: US Pacific Standard Time (UTC-8). Hope to see more posts here, any random chat will warm my heart!

Sure!!! Let´s do that despite the time zones!Mine is BRST UTC -3.

And...best of luck to all of us!

I also applied to CU Boulder ALC for Chinese modern literature :) Just hoping that Boulder's decisions will come out early

Seems like there were some interviews conducted by Princeton / Upen/ Ohio

    Wish you good luck!!

Hi! Nice to hear that you have also applied to UC Boulder. Yes...I am aware that they are already conducting interviews for Princeton and Upenn. Unfortunately, haven´t heard from them yet. Fingers crossed!!!

  13. Hi, all there! I am glad to find this thread because I now have someone to make me company while my anxiety hits hard here! I am currently enrolled in a MA in Translation Studies, but my main interest is in Japanese literature. I applied to Princeton, Upenn, Umich (ALC & Comp Lit), UCL-Davis (Comparative Literature) and University of Colorado -Boulder (ALC). Haven´t heard from any of them so far, but really hoping we all can get admission for Fall 2023!! Best of luck!!
