  1. Hey all

I am currently pursuing my B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech. I have an offer from GaTech for a MS in Electrical Engineering (With full funding). The program I got into is a 1 year program, which means that if I do take up the program, I will graduate in December 2011.

I have a good academic record and hence think that I have a good chance at atleast one of these- MIT, Stanford and Berkeley.

I want to do a masters but am not sure about where to do it from. MIT, Stanford and Berkeley have a better reputation than GaTech, but if I do decide to apply to them and if I do decide to wait for their decisions, I will have to start my Masters program in September 2011. Also, I am not sure if I will be able to secure funding from these schools.

Do you guys think that going to one of these other schools will really make a big difference in my career? Should I even consider applying to those schools or should I just take the Georgia Tech option?

I think attending a different school (even for an MS) would broaden your horizons and challenge you. You could use the summer to intern in an industry segment you are interested in. I also feel that MIT, Stanford and Berkeley have a lot more interdisciplinary options that could prepare you better for a professional career.

  2. I feel you have a good shot at all the schools. Just need to make sure you write a SOP where can project yourself as a good fit at the program. I would suggest applying to just a M.S program at a few schools on that list. Getting into the M.S program is a bit easier, you might need to support yourself for a semester or so.

Just took the GRE today, my scores were 520V, 800Q!!!

  3. Thanks

The bus schedules are kind of a pain at first, but you'll get used to them. As for the apartments, I don't know a whole lot about them. I can tell you that I found a lot of available houses at this site if your on the fence about the others:

    http://www.rentjungle.com/

I found my place through here, so I just thought I'd let you know in case your options don't work out, as is sometimes the case. Happy hunting!

  4. I can give it a shot. PM me

Hey, I have just finished with a first draft of my SOP. Can someone go through it and let me know on any critical information I have missed to include.

  5. Hi Guys

I am joining CMU in the spring semester. Have been searching for an apartment online. I found a few apartments that looked nice:

    1) Hempstead Properties

    2) Walnut on the Park

    3) Hobart Court

All three are manged by Walnut Capital. I was wondering if any of these would be good choices. It seems that they will be about 2 miles from Scaife Hall. I think all of them are close to schenley park .Is the shuttle service quite regular in these parts? I dont mind walking that distance either, if the roads are kept clear.

Your feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

  6. I think if you can write an SOP which ties all your industry experience with the research being conducted bya specific prof/groups at those schools you would have a fair shot. Might need to improve your verbal score a bit (most of the top programs average around 580-600). You should also apply to some schools between rank 10-20. Hope that helps.

    Does nobody want to answer?

Even to say: Dude, you'll never get in one of those.

  7. @rs_nucl, are you applying for Spring 2011 or Fall 2011?

Pls, I applied for master program in petroleum engineering for spring 2011 and i was wondering what period i should start receiving responses (Acceptance/Rejection/Waiting) from the schools? Early/Mid/late October or November? Any idea?

I am an international student with BSc in petroleum engineering.

Most schools start reviewing application after the official deadline. Typically spring admission deadline is september 30 - october 15. I would think 1 month after the deadline would be fair game. I am assuming I will get some feedback after the 2nd week of november.

  8. So there will be a tough competition this fall2011, maybe.:o . Which other univ's would you suggest for safe list ??

I am not very certain about CS programs (you need to consider if the program is conducting research that matches your interest). Based on US News stats, these are some unis to consider:

    Michigan State University

    University of Illinois--Chicago

    Northeastern University

    University at Buffalo--SUNY

    Syracuse University

    Oregon State University

    University of Tennessee--Knoxville

    University of Delaware

    University of Connecticut

Some one pursuing masters in CS or with undergraduate background would be better equipped to handle this question.

  9. Hy rs_nucl,

Sorry to tell you, but you are likely to have to wait a while. You can check the grad cafe's survey results from spring application from last year (just search for your program and school) to get an idea of when they sent out their admits for last Spring admission.

I looked at the thread. Not a whole lot spring 10 info there. I did notice that Duke and CMU were quite good with notifications. Penn State and MIT might take their sweet time. Thanks

  10. Tentatively when do you think I would start recieving accept/reject notifications for the Spring 2011 session? What is longest delay you would expect. Schools I am applying to have deadlines around the oct 15. Thanks

  11. If you are applying to the MS program, I think you would have a good chance at:

    NCSU

    University of Arizona

    University of Irvine

    North Dakota State University

As you are aware, the economy in the US is slow at this time. Therefore, a number of qualified applicants (with work experience or professional aspirations after college) will be a lot greater. Just something to consider.

  12. It would serve you well to take the gre again. I think you would have a strong profile due to your work experience. But you can check with admissions dept about min. requirements for the program you are applying to. If you just took the GRE recently, it should not be too hard maintain the verbal and math scores, and you could just concentrate on the analytical writing. Should take 15-20 days tops to prepare. The topics for the analytical are also on the ets website.

So you mean i Give another Shot at GRE to improve my analytical score. Or can i have a possibility of getting in the universities i have mentioned.

  13. You should check the admission criteria. Some universities specify a minimum of 4.0 on analytical writing (example penn state, u.maryland requires 4.5 and 1200<). Your GRE score is fine for engineering schools. But I think you should practice analytical section and get 4.0+. There is a grading software on the ETS website that you can use to practice. It is the same software used to score your writing section of the real test. The charge is 15$. It is fairly accurate.

  14. Hi Everyone,

I love Political Science and would like to get into a graduate program in Political Economy. Can you evalute my profile and give me suggestions on how to improve my application?

    Education:

    Bachelors:

Started: University of Wisconsin Madison, Economics, GPA: 3.9/4.0

Transfered to Georgetown University School of Foreign Service

Graduated: BS, Georgetown University International Political Economy (IPE), GPA 3.74/4.00,

    Honors Thesis In IPE

    Topic: Econometric model analyzing rioting

    (graduated in three years)

    Masters:h

    London School of Economics

    MSc Applicable Mathematics

Focused in Game Theory...Distinction in Games of Incomplete Information, High Merit in Game Theory

Awaiting Full Results: Probably graduate with a Merit or High Merit

Dissertation Topic: A mathematical approach to analyzing political simulation games

-Using game theory concepts to analyze electoral algorithms (thinking of using this for writing sample...good idea??...it is quite mathematical)

    GRE:

I have taken the GRE twice. The first time I did poorly in writing so I decided to take it again. The second time I focused only in writing and did much worse in everything else...should I take the GRE again or would it look bad? Do they take my highest score in each subsection?

    1) My first attempt: 760Q, 620V, 3.5A,

    2) My second attempt: 670Q, 580V, 5.0A

    Personal Statement:

I would like to write about dyslexia, and some of my research ideas in political economy.

    Letters of Rec:

Letters good from not very well known in political science, but well known in other fields, i.e. mathematical game theory, economics....

    Original Research:

Only my senior thesis and my master's dissertation, no published papers

I would like to know if I have a chance at the top 6 programs, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Berkeley etc...and if not, how to improve my chances at the top programs...

I think your stats match up well with applicants who are typically accepted at these schools. You have some advantages:

    1) Pursued your studies at highly rated institutions

    2) Had overseas experience (Broader Perspective)

I think the key will be to present some of your unique experiences in the SOP.

One weak point in your application is that you have not published results in a journal (which might raise questions regarding your research potential). You should also try to address that in your SOP especially if you are applying to a PHD program.

Be sure to know all the programs well and tailor the SOP as applicable. Try not to make generic statements. I think you would get into at least one of the top 6 programs.

Any reasons why your quant gre score went down so drastically? Being a economics major I would have thought your math score would not have been affected even if you were concentrating on analytical writing.

  15. 1) I think it should be ok to list teaching high school students, especially if the subjects were related/necessary prepration to pursue your graduate degree . It would show case that you are comfortable or have had the experience presenting material in front of students and that you have already attained a level of proficiency in your desired concentration.

    2) Most undergraduates research projects do not lead to publications. So it should not deter you from listing the research experience.

    Hope this helps.

newms I think you have provided some excellent feedback to a number participants on this forum. If you have some time could you please review my profile. Thanks.

  16. Greetings All,

I'll cut to the chase I want to go into Non Profit Management and am really attracted to the MPA program at Wagner. I am also looking in UGA's MPA program as well. I ultimately want to start my own non profit arts and technology center for teens. My profile is as follows

Bachelors GPA: Overall 2.74, Major GPA 3.1 (Psychology Degree from top HBCU)

I didn't find out I wasn't an auditory learner until deep into my collegiate career after some testing from the wellness center on campus. Also found out I have a math deficiency.

Grades showed improvement once I found out how I best retain information.

Associate Degree GPA : 3.50 (AA in Audio Production from an Art Institute directly after my BA)

This is a result of studying something I was very interested in and after understanding how to better retain information. hopefully this will be considered a sign of my ability to perform academically.

I have been out of school for 2 years and have worked at a restaurant since I graduated as I was unable to secure anything in education or media as I had planned. As I have been searching for careers I have been really brainstorming about what I want to ultimately and decided on the Nonprofit about 6 months ago. I've been researching schools and the field ever since.

    During my collegiate career:

As a freshmen I co-founded an organization on campus which is still doing very well (8 years later)

I coached a freshmen dorm step team from 2003-2009 (new team every year) All teams are 1st place winners except one team came in 2nd

I mentored high school students my sophomore-senior year

Also taught a poetry class to middle school students sophomore and junior year

Haven't taken the GRE yet but I'm strong in verbal

I've always wanted to go into some sort of education but couldn't figure out in what way. I know for sure this is what I want to do career-wise but don't know if my credentials + a decent GRE score is good enough.

I appreciate your feedback on my credentials, what steps I can take to polish my app, and what GRE score, if any, can help my chances.

Your GPA is below par. However, this could be offset by a stellar SOP (that showcases your passion). You may even want to explain how you overcame challenges you faced in college. The improvements in your grades later on could be used bolster those claims. In addition, try to get recs that back your academic potential.

  17. Hi guys would really appreicate your feedback:

    Good Recs.

My personal statement is also posted, if you guys are interested: http://forum.thegrad...tory-diversity/

Please let me know if you need additionally information.

I have applied to the following programs: Duke, CMU, MIT and Penn State.

  18. Without research experience it might be hard to get into the M.S program. But due to to your prof. exp you might have a chance at a M.E (course work option) program. If your major GPA or upperclass GPA is significantly better it might help. I would still suggest that you apply to a few tier II universities. US News would be a good resource to know the average stats for most unis. Hope this helps.
