  1. Some more advice needed...

I have been accepted to UPenn's PhD program and I'm 95% sure that I'll accept. This morning I received notification from Cambridge's MPhil department that they'd like to interview me (they do everything late). I'm pretty sure there's no case in which I'll turn down five years of funding at a really perfect program (for me), so I'm thinking I should decline the interview. Is that a mistake? And is there a nice way to do it?

    Thank you!

  2. Hi carebear86,

I'm sorry to hear you are still waiting...I got in last Thursday (phone call and email). They mentioned that there were putting some people on a waitlist, and that they hadn't contacted them yet. I think rejections have gone out, so if you haven't heard, maybe that's good news? I'm not really sure... Best best best of luck! I'll have my fingers crossed for you!

  3. Hi,

My apologies in advance if this is a stupid question :)

I'm in the process of filling out the FAFSA, and I'm wondering if I'm supposed to send my Student Aid Report to all the schools I applied to right now, or if I submit those school codes once I've been accepted (fingers-crossed). None of my schools required completion of the FAFSA by a certain deadline (as far as I can tell).

Thanks in advance for the help and advice!

  4. Thanks for all the ideas and the um, lively, debate over recommendations. I think I'll go with some great chocolate treats from a specialty store in my neighborhood, as I'm pretty close to these profs and I really would like to do something more than just a note for the assistant. Plus, who doesn't love chocolate?

    Thanks again!

  5. Very cool -- I'm applying for Yale and Harvard as well, and a few master's programs (Cambridge, LSE, Stanford). I'm interested in the adoption of technology in American homes, as well as some other related (human-machine boundaries) and not-so-related (history of psychology/psychiatry) topics. I think it's all pretty fun :)

It's pretty crazy how small the field it -- I was looking at Yale's stats and saw that only 32 people applied to the program last year (compared to 300+ for the regular History program). Sadly, I don't think that makes our chances of getting in any better...

  6. Thanks for the responses! I'd like to send a gift to the assistant of one of the profs -- the recs would not have been submitted without her help -- but I don't want to create an awkward situation either. I think I'll go with snail mail notes for now.

  7. Hi,

Now that all my apps are in (well, almost all...) I'm getting ready to send thank you notes to the professors who wrote my recommendations. I've heard of some people sending gifts (flowers, wine) while others just send notes. I'm not sure what's the standard -- any advice?

    Thanks!

  8. Hi,

I originally posted this in the History forum, but I've yet to see a reply. I'm re-posting here, as I'm not sure where the Hist/Soc of Science/Med/Tech people are living..

    ---

I just received notification (on 12/24) that I have an interview at UPenn for the History & Sociology of Science PhD program. I am absolutely ecstatic -- and terrified : ) -- anyone have any knowledge about what the on campus interview entails, and how best to prepare myself?

    Thanks!
