  1. Crossing my fingers you get good news! I actually ended up not sending in my SVA app πŸ˜ͺ I was so burnt out by the time I did the other 6, I probably should've, but oh well. thank you though!
  2. I had a dream that I got an interview request from Tyler 😩
  3. Definitely had a minor meltdown once I submitted all my apps lol, but I'm trying not to think too much about the work I submitted until I (hopefully) get interviews. I'm just spending as much time in the studio as I can without putting too much pressure on myself to make anything. and making Valentine's Day prints for friends so I have something else to focus on!
  4. I did! and will definitely post any updates ☺️ Looks like last year they started sending interview requests around January 18th through the end of the month...!
  5. glad more people are starting to post because I'm extremely curious as to where others are applying! Most of what I make is collage and mixed media. I work around themes of autonomy, control, and power, and how we exist/relate to/cope with those ideas under late capitalism. I applied to printmaking programs as I'd like to expand in that direction and it's sort of the closest discipline in terms of what I do.
  6. Yes! I liked her a lot and was really appreciative to get a one-on-one review. I'm surprised how few posts are in here as well. Hope we see some other people log on soon!
  7. Completed my applications over the weekend, whew! Now waiting, and I suppose preparing for interviews (fingers crossed)?!? My final list, all printmaking or visual arts: RISD VCU Tyler Yale SMFA SUNY Purchase
  8. Yale has recorded versions of their virtual information sessions and I found them helpful. They are on their Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCDwJT0mYodTSodcpH-hGmdA I know these programs are extremely competitive, but hearing what the faculty and current cohort had to say actually put me at ease in terms of feeling like this is the right time for me to apply. Good luck!
  9. I had a portfolio review with SMFA Tufts today and it was incredibly helpful! The admissions director gave me some things to think about as I finalize my portfolio and gave me reassurance that this is the right time to pursue an MFA, so, fingers crossed 😬 My final list of schools, all printmaking or interdisciplinary: RISD VCU Tyler Yale SMFA Tufts SUNY Purchase SVA because I got an application waiver
  10. Great to hear! I have a few friends in Philly and though I've only been there for half a day 10 years ago, people tell me I'd like it there πŸ™‚ a good DIY/music scene is important to me. I've spent very little time on the east coast in general but tbh I'm not really interested in living anywhere out west outside of San Francisco, so I'm going for it in terms of a big move. Also thinking of adding SUNY Purchase to my list, their printmaking program seems strong! Are you looking at painting for all of your schools? I would apply to Northwestern however I'm not sure I could hack the Chicago winters. Location has definitely been my #1 factor in terms of choosing programs.
  11. Does anyone have advice/input on applying to different departments at the same school? My practice falls between mediums and I'm worrying a bit about picking the "wrong" department lol. I'd consider some of my work to be printmaking-adjacent and I'd love to explore that direction more thoroughly with future work, but I don't necessarily possess the technical knowledge in that arena (or how much does that matter overall?). Also took a look at RISD Illustration and noticed that 1) their examples of student work are across all mediums, which I liked, but 2) their faculty seems very commercially-oriented in terms of their careers, which I am less inclined toward. I was leaning more toward photo or printmaking but the illustration department seems pretty expansive so now I have three departments to consider...
  12. Hi everybody! This will be my first year applying. I feel a little under-prepared after doing a TON of research and prep at the beginning of the year, and then life got in the way for a few months... I'm still finalizing my list of schools to apply to, but my short list at the moment is: -CCA (I live in the bay and it would be nice to stay because I love my apartment. haha) -RISD (was not on my list but I found a lecturer whose work I love is there, so might as well try despite the price tag) -VCU -Tyler I'm also on the fence about UC Davis, I may go ahead and apply there since it's also near me and I've heard really great things about it. My work is sort of in-between mediums--I make collage and do some drawing and printmaking. Excited to hear from everyone else!
  13. Hey everyone! I posted a thread in this forum earlier in the year but unfortunately didn't get my shit together in time to apply, haha. Planning on doing so next winter and maybe being more open-minded to leaving the west coast, as that was a big mental roadblock in researching schools initially. Good luck to everyone!
  14. Hi everyone! Glad to have found this forum after a few weeks of research on MFA programs. I received my BFA from UNM Albuquerque in 2015 and after several years of developing my independent practice while working full-time, I'm feeling ready for a change in my life and for the opportunity to take my work to another level through an MFA program. I have studio space and show semi-frequently in small galleries in my area (Bay Area), but I think my practice could really benefit from returning to an environment where I can further hone my critical skills and have access to facilities where I can experiment more and strengthen the conceptual aspects of my work. I'm looking for a program that encourages interdisciplinary exploration. I make primarily collage and have some skills in photography, drawing, painting. Reading some posts on here I'm worried that I might be a little overly ambitious thinking I could realistically attend in Fall 2024. I have a lot of work that I've made over the last couple of years so I feel relatively confident in my portfolio, but I haven't started my statement of purpose and I need to heavily revise my artist statement. I'm not too worried about letters of recommendation as I've luckily maintained relationships with my mentors from undergrad. All that being said I'm also still working on my list of schools to apply to. I'd ideally like to stay in California or on the west coast and a well- or fully-funded and interdisciplinary program would be ideal. I'm not sure there are any institutions in the Bay Area that are worth applying to. CCA appears to be the most well regarded however the price tag pretty quickly takes it off my list. -UC Davis is the closest school to me currently with a program that looks like it might be a good fit, and from a glance I think I would get along with some of the faculty. -UCLA (although I've read some criticism of this school lately re: faculty being uninvolved or retiring--also their low acceptance rate makes it feel like a longshot) I signed up for a zoom info session in a couple weeks -UC Irvine -UCSD - not particularly interested in living in this area but I'd like to know peoples' experiences here -U of Oregon - this program looks like it offers good funding and I like the work I saw from the current MFA candidates, however I'm not sure how plugged-in to the art world this university is in terms of further opportunities--I haven't seen much discussion on this school in general online. I suppose my questions are: Am I a bit late in the game to be starting the application process so soon for admission next year? Are there any schools missing from this list that are worth considering? thanks for reading! Interested in reading others' experiences and from others who are hoping to start next fall as well!
