  1. Hi all, I have just firmly accepted my offer to Western, so a spot on McGill's waitlist will open up! I am not sure if other schools do this but if you have the chance to visit a school you may be considering before accepting, I 100% would! I've just toured Western today and learned some interesting things about Western's program as well as cool opportunities that I would have never known about previously!

  2. Hello all! Has anyone who received an offer gotten information related to bursary/entrance scholarship on their letter? I have heard previously that if a school is to offer financial aid to you directly it would be through the offer letter, but I have not received that. I specifically am curious about Western or McGill offers (because those are what I have received), but if anyone who got offers from other schools has any info I'd love to know as well :) TIA!

Congrats you guys, major achievement :)

For the people who got accepted into Western and UofT and are comfortable sharing their stats/experience, please PM or let me know if it's okay to PM you!!

I was waitlisted in the 4th quadrant last year (bottom of the list) but was accepted to Western this year! I don't mind sharing here because I am sure it would benefit others too.

My subGPA is 3.82 and i got 4Q Casper, I only took an extra phonetics course over the last year to apply to McGill, didn't think it was necessary to focus on upping my grades. As soon as I was waitlisted last year, I began volunteering with older adults with aphasia and later I got a job as an SLPA working with clients of all ages and varying speech abilities. I think many people have these same types of experiences, so I would say I think the most important thing I did was re-read my personal statement from last year (mine was trash LOL) and instead of regurgitating my CV that they already have, I focused on little moments that made me more passionate about the field and helped me learn about the broader community (e.g., learning about new cultures and new life perspectives while interacting with different clients). I also did some research in my undergrad and talked about how letting research guide my practice as an SLPA helped me a lot. All in all, I think sharing the little moments you take away from relevant experiences is much more impactful than just listing what you did during an experience. Please feel free to message me if you have more questions.:)

Adding an edit to say I did not find any SLPA job postings online (only for CDA, at least in my general area) so I took it upon myself to cold email like 20 clinics lol but it only takes one to have some confidence in your ability to provide therapy!

Hi!! Super nervous for April 3.

Just wondering if anyone knows people who have gotten into Western or UofT with a sub-GPA of 3.6-3.7?

I emailed Janet (Western CSD admissions) and she said people who usually get offered admission are around 3.5 and higher. But then again I haven't seen anyone with a 3.6-3.7 get accepted on these threads :( Super nervous!!

Hey! I can't say for certain because I was waitlisted last year but from my understanding, Western prioritizes experience over grades as compared to a school like UofT or Mac. I know people who got rejected with high 3.8s and know one person who got in with a 3.65 :) hopefully this provides some sort of reassurance!

  5. Congratulations to all of you who got into UofA today!!!!!! You all should be very proud because this is a big deal!😊

On a completely unrelated note, to everyone who applied to McGill..... what do you think is gonna happen on the 2nd? Do we think an email will come out at midnight??? Do we think they're still gonna call during the day?!? I know there's no real way of knowing (unless someone called) but i'd love to know what you all think because the nerves are eating me ALIVE

McGill just updated the website to reflect the new date for application decisions. April 2. Now we can all try and relax for the next 2ish weeks hahah

I wonder if this means the applicant portal will update at midnight or if they'll send emails/call sometime during that day... either way that's gonna be one stressful day with ORPAS decisions coming out at midnight the next day!

Hi everyone! I was just wondering, does McGill consider your GPA from your entire Bachelor's degree or does it look at your GPA from the last two years of your studies? :)

Hey :) I believe McGill considers your entire Bachelor's degree since their website references a "cumulative grade point average" (cGPA) which means that would be your average across all undergraduate years!

For those applying to Dal, what was your email subject and what did you include in the body of the email?

I'm thinking for subject: SCSD Submission: B00#-SLP and nothing for the body but just want to confirm!

    @BrocasArea @tayslp @MarySLP

lol last year I just submitted the pdf with the subject line "[lastname].[firstname].SLP Package" so I think anything of the variation you suggested would be good!

    Hello friends,

I have submitted my application for Dal about 2 weeks ago. I am still waiting for the Identification (B00 Number). Last year I got it after a few days! Is anyone in the same boat?

Hey! Because you applied last year too, your B00 number is the same. It should have said what your B00 number is in the email you received once you paid the application fee for this application cycle. As a re-applicant, I did not receive any new emails with a B00 number, just one when I paid this year that said it in the email. If you need it you should just refer to yours from last year:)

  10. Hi all! I had a question related to Dalhousie's professional reference form. I understand that for non-institutional emails (e.g., hotmail, gmail), Dal will not be able to have their e-reference system send an email with the reference form to your referees. It's listed on their admissions site to send those referees with non-institutional emails the pdf reference form yourself, which I have done for my professional referee, however, it doesn't say whether there needs to be a certain subject line in the email the referee then has to send to the CSD email. Does anyone know what/if there is a specific subject line that needs to be used in that email? I have tried getting in touch with Dal's grad studies and CSD department many times and I haven't heard back at all. Please let me know and thanks in advance! :)

Hey! thanks for helping out. The section titled "planned course of study" I have chosen SLP but what does the section visiting students and indicated area of study mean? do I leave that blank? Secondly, on the "Additional information" section the part where it wants you to list studies in progress, am I meant to put all the classes I am currently in and will be in next semester or can I also leave that blank?? Again, I feel like these are really dumb question and I am over thinking things but I am stressed lol

For the visiting students section you'll just leave that blank- that I assume is if you are on a LOP (letter of permission) like I have done before where you take a course or a semester at a different university than your home institution. This year I put the one course I was taking currently (fall 2023) in the studies in progress section, but I honestly do not remember writing out all my courses last year when I was in undergrad lol. I would probably do it out of precaution, or give grad studies a call, they are super helpful. I hope this helps and best of luck:)

Hey everyone. Has anyone ever taken the linguistics prereqs online with U of A? (linguistics, phonetics, and language aquisiton). I'm about to take all 3 and I'm quite scared lol.

Also, I really really don't want to take anatomy and physiology but it's required for all the ontario schools. Do you guys have expereince with taking the year long athabasca course? I'm struggling haha

Also, also, what does everyone have in terms of volunteering experience? I feel like my volunteer section has a big gap in it (prob bc of covid) and so I only really have 1 long stroke group facilitation experience with like 200 hours and volunteering at a lab as an RA for two years. I worry this isn't enough, especially for U of A. Any feedback is appreciated :)

Hey! I have taken LING 101 from UofA as a student from Ontario, and I thought the course was very straightforward, although I hate the way the grading scheme works. I’m not sure about BC, but in Ontario, your final grade reflects your absolute achievement in a course (e.g., you average a 85% in the class and get an A). For UofA, they mark on a curve, meaning that your final grade is calculated in comparison to the rest of the class. I say this all to say I did pretty well in LING101 from an absolute achievement perspective, but since the class average was set to 81% by my prof, if you got 81%, you’d have a B on your transcript. I would prioritize your UofA courses to make sure you are closer to the top of your class to best reflect your absolute achievement. I don’t say all this to scare you, I honestly just wish I knew this information before taking this class last year. Best of luck:)

OHHH, this makes sense. thank you for clearing that up. yikes my second year grades were not the greatest, if i were to take extra courses (lets say 5 to cover the first semester) they wouldnt count my second year first sem?

Also if you're comfortable answering how did you find the application process last year, anything you learned, what you're doing different ect.

No problem! No matter if you take extra courses, in subGPA calculations they won’t ever cut a semester in half for their calculation. So if you apply next fall (for sept 2025) and don’t take extra courses, they will average your entire second year. If you take 5 extra classes through summer school or some other means, then I believe they’ll only count your third year plus the extra 5 classes (so long as they’re more recent than your second year) and your fourth year first semester.

In terms of how I found the application process, I was really intimidated at first about not being qualified enough, but I was waitlisted at the two schools I applied to, so I now know I wasn’t far off from what they’re looking for. I think generally it seems scarier than it is. I just plan on gaining more experience with my gap year and I am also taking 5 classes to knock out a term  and take pre reqs for other schools!

    Hi everyone!!

Have been a long time lurker of these forums but finally decided to make a post. I'm planning to apply next fall and I'm so nervous!! I was just wondering if anyone knows about how they calculate the sgpa. Like since we apply at the end of the fall semester, do the schools only the our first semester of the fourth year of undergrad and consider our second semester of 2nd year since they look at 20 courses. Sorry if I worded that poorly, but I'm just wondering if grad schools consider fourth year second semester grades?

Hey! This will be my second time applying so I can answer this for you lol. They will only factor in grades for fourth year from first semester into your subGPA (for Ontario schools), and technically since some applicants have year-long courses, they do not separate school years in calculation, meaning that your entire second year will be averaged to weigh 5 courses worth… I hope that makes sense. If you have pre reqs in progress for second semester, they will only check that you’ve made their grade cutoff if they have one (e.g., you take general anatomy in second semester and UofT checks to see if you reached their B+ or higher requirement).
