Hi all,
After six rejections, I finally got accepted to UToronto's MA and UCLA's PhD program! Although I still have to hear from three schools, I will most likely choose UCLA.
It has been a harrowing process but I am really excited to conduct research in Korean literature and feminist/queer studies. I wish you all the best in the remaining cycle and your future endeavors!
I was also wondering if anyone else interviewed with the University of Washington(Seattle)?
I did a Zoom interview with two POIs in Korean studies; seemed more casual not like a committee interview but they asked some in-depth questions about my writing sample...They were very nice though. Towards the latter part of the interview we just spoke in full Korean. Had a good experience overall!
Best of luck to anyone else who is doing interviews!
Same here; haven't heard anything back from USC
By the way, has anyone applied for the McDonnell fellowship at Washington University(WUST)? I wonder how much the fellowship application/decision influences the actual PhD application/decision...
I did a one-on-one virtual interview with the POI at UCLA, but none from the others. I also applied to UChicago and USC and haven't heard back.
The professor at UCLA said that they don't do official interviews with the entire committee; it's more informal interviews with professors reaching out to students.
Hi, I applied to ten PhDs and one MA (for UToronto, because they usually require a MA for PhD).
A couple of professors I consulted at my study-abroad school in the States thought that I should just apply straight to a PhD.
I might apply for an MA in Korea in the spring depending on the results of this application cycle since admission and funding are very competitive.
Best of luck for everyone! The application process was (still is..) tough but I think I learned a lot from this cycle
Hi, I also applied to multiple Korean language and culture programs this year as an international student from Korea
Nice to see someone also doing Korean studies; I haven't seen many on this site.
It's my first year applying straight from undergrad but I'm hoping to get at least some experience with interviews!
