hi idk if this is relevant but in my sop i wrote about my friend who got expelled from columbia’s mfa creative writing program last spring for protesting and speaking for Palestine and he told me his writing and thinking will never stop. I was the TA for Arab cinema class at that time and I also wrote about my relevant family history in China in my story which is highly political and I kinda regretted doing it. I definitely didn’t FIT into American narratives and am a red flag. But i view this application cycle as part of my personal growth. im glad i did it

I wonder if you know any online writing group/workshop (or nyc offline) where mfa applicants can help each other develop their writing? 🫂 English is not my first language but I love the feeling of “approaching the edge of the world/ surpassing myself in a foreign language”. I’m happy that I made a brave decision to try applying for fiction program in the states even if it was not my major and I might get several rejections. I’m ready to go back to China this summer because I just graduated in feb. But I will continue to read and write in English (I still remember the first time i read Toni Morrison and ocean vuong I felt like a new world opening up). I had wonderful memories in the US and still wanna connect with the writer communities. If you have any recommendations I would be very happy. looking at draft there seems to be roughly 5% acceptance/waitlist vs mass rejection 😭 esp when the program is fully funded. My friends who are in Columbia’s mfa told me they usually accept 80 fiction+15 poetry +20 nonfiction each year but the tuition/expenses can easily get to 110,000 per year in nyc and they’ve never heard of anyone who got scholarships. I’m on student visa rn in the states and I’m so scared of restarting my life, leaving my partner, finding jobs, etc. but I know I’ll continue writing no matter where god leads me to. ✨🫂
