I just got my email last night with the details of the increase, directly from SSHRC. But, for anyone else in this position, the increase is not as much as they claim it is, so don't budget for it too enthusiastically. It is peculiar that the press releases etc. claim doctoral students will go from $20k/yr to $40k/yr when in fact the award can't exceed $120k in total, and the doctoral fellowship is often a four-year award. 4 x $40k = $160k, which is over the limit, so they knock off $40k from the total. Perhaps they're going to change it to a three-year award in future (3 x $40k = $120k). Either way, it's an increase, for which I'm grateful, but this concept of an "overall limit" is silly and goes against the spirit of the grant hikes. $120k/4 is still $30k/year, which is barely livable in most major Canadian university cities, especially right now!
