  1. Yes. In context I think the terms are synonymous.
  2. This is a pretty stock question that a lot of people ask but I'd like to hear some perspectives on it: assuming that the school is a good match and the research is interesting, do you guys think its better to go with a 63 year old advisor who has a substantial reputation or a 35-45 year old advisor who may or may not have tenure but is at the apex of his career when you join and will be publishing many papers? It seems that most of the professors I am most interested in working with are older than 50, many are older than 60. A lot of the 60-65 year old guys assure me that they won't retire before I graduate and they seem to be fairly energetic but its hard to tell. Any perspectives on working with older advisors?
  3. Yep, I got that email a few days ago. Yale is going to pay they just sent out a letter inviting us before they sent out the letter saying they were going to pay.
  4. Out of curiosity, has anyone been rejected from Northwestern yet? I called them today and they said my application was with the admissions committee and that they still plan to admit more students. However, based on their acceptances last year, I am rather skeptical of this...
  5. Unfortunately, this does mean that you didn't make it at Columbia. Several of us have called and been told that if you didn't receive an acceptance by now, you're out. If you call the department program coordinator, Alix Lamia, she will tell you the status of your application. MIT seems to have only rejected organic by now but its not good if you haven't heard back. Still, congratulations on Harvard!
  6. To make matters worse, New Haven is incredibly difficult to get to (from my perspective) and its on the same weekend that the ACS conference starts.
  7. UCLA UT Austin University of Chicago Princeton UCSD Cornell I know that many others do. These and Yale are all the schools I've gotten into. So I think it's strange that Yale won't pay for the visit.
  8. The letter I got from Yale didn't mention anything about paying for our plane fare. Does this mean they aren't paying for us to visit? Pretty much every school I've gotten into except for Yale, with a 16 billion endowment, pays for the visit. WTF?
  9. I'm theoretical. If this is some sort of a wait list then this is my third wait list. Harvard, Columbia and here. I guess I'll be crossing my fingers until April 15th.
  10. I did exactly that but nothing pops up. I guess they haven't made a decision yet.
  11. Can someone explain to me how to check my decision via website for MIT? I didn't get any email.
  12. Great, I'm one of those 7. This is my second wait list (also at Harvard at for chemical physics).
  13. It does, thanks. And Gipp, yeah I'm going to the March visitation.
  14. gipp - same exact thing happened to me. In at Chicago for theoretical and haven't heard from Columbia. Vanderboy - who exactly did you call? Might seem like a weird question but I don't know what part of the department to call for this.
  15. Anyone know about Yale's visitation dates? I just got accepted today but the link from the website basically said "you're accepted, good job" and nothing else.
