  1. Hopefully nada. I work for a private university and am earning my MS through a tuition remission program. In today's job market, I probably wouldn't have opted for grad school if tuition remission were not an option.

However, my husband has about $30K in undergraduate loan debt, so I'll be assisting in paying that off.

  2. Hello all!

I recently got a job at a university that offers tuition remission for graduate school, so I'm throwing together a VERY last minute application for a MS in Higher Education program. The application technically calls for a simple essay, but I wanted to write a strong statement of purpose, despite only having worked/studied in this field for a grand total of two weeks. I need to submit my application on Monday, so I'm on a bit of a time crunch and reworking the entire statement is not an option in my case.

Might anybody be willing to look my draft over and point out any glaring errors?

  3. Hello Elsie! I just started a new job with Drexel (Sacramento Campus), so I've been immersing myself in all the program information. From what I understand, library science programs can be a little hard to come by today, and registration for in-person programs have been slipping due to the economy. The ischool programs are designed for professionals who want to earn a graduate degree.

I have a few professor contacts if you would like me so send their information your way. However, I get the sense you're looking for input from current students. I believe there are a few on my campus, so please let me know if you'd like me to track a few of them down.

I did find this little tidbit of information...

"This online library science degree program was "America's Best Graduate Schools 2007," U.S.News & World Report, and has ranked the Drexel University College of Information Science and Technology's Master's in Library and Information Science 11th in the nation overall, while its specialties in Information Systems and Digital Librarianship came in at numbers 5 and 6, respectively."

  4. Is your husband's institution on the quarter system, or the semester system?

My institution runs on quarters, so my first check doesn't usually come until sometime in early (or even mid) October—but it's farily understandable, given that the fall quarter doesn't usually start until the last week of September.

His program starts on September 16th and UC Davis is on the quarter system. We'd expected the checks to be distributed monthly or biweekly, but we were surprised to learn that they will be going out in two lump sums of $13,000.

  5. At the suggestion of the graduate school, my husband and I moved to our new location early. They suggested no later than August 1st, but we settled in the second week of July

He'd been casually told that the first stipend checks are distributed in August or September. To our surprise, he received a letter yesterday notifying the students in the program that they should expect their first check on November 1st. In the same email, it is reiterated that students should move to town no later than August 1st in order to ensure housing.

Is this out of the ordinary? We'd put enough aside (about $5000) to last us through September, but I'm concerned that I won't find a job as quickly as I'd hoped and that we'll be in hot water come October. I would appreciate any insight anyone might have.

  6. Dendro, try using the Davis Wiki as a resource. My husband and I made the rounds at the pet friendly apartments and our top choices were Davis Townhouse Apartments, Cranbrook Apartments, and Sycamore Lane Garden Apartments.

My husband and I grew up in the Bay Area and made frequent trips to Davis in high school. Let me know if we can answer any questions about the surrounding cities. The traffic on 80 has really become out of control in the past decade or so.

  7. Hi,

I'm a domestic rising senior applying to a number of Molecular Bio programs this fall. I was wondering about how I stand alongside other applicants out there? I've got a 3.7 GPA at a top 10 USWNR university, have been working in a lab since freshman year, and have a handful of undergraduate publications, along with a 3rd author paper recently submitted to a top journal. i think I should have a very strong rec from my PI as well.

I recently took my GRE and got 780Q, and 610V. However, my writing and bio subject test aren't as hot....4.5 and 720 respectively. Do you think it would still be worth retaking the GRE to improve my writing score, or the GRE subject Bio? Would it be worth sending the subject score at all? I'm still not quite sure what schools truly mean when they say that subject scores are "recommended." I'm looking to apply to programs such as Stanford Biosci.

    Thanks for your help!

I think the subject test definitely played an integral part in my husband's admission to two programs. Your writing GRE shouldn't be a problem, as it seems to be on par with past Stanford Biosci admits.

You have a strong application. Don't worry too much. Do your best and then focus your energy on other parts of the application.

  8. Ayiti, my friends in the theater program typically rent large houses and run their own "theater frat."

My husband and I are moving in less than a month! We opted for Sycamore Lane Garden Apartments and we love the neighborhood. Very, very convenient for those who want to bike to campus. Also, a Trader Joe's is literally a matter of steps away. I'd recommend it to anyone who can manage to sign a lease.

  9. Hey Mrs. Grad! I'm going to UC Davis for Genetics. As a person from Madison, WI, I'm mostly looking forward to not having to deal with snow anymore!

If anyone out there is looking for a roommate, hit me up :)

YAY! Congratulations on your acceptance, Avhosa. My husband will be in the BMCDB (Biology) group and will be looking for some science-minded friends when we move. What apartments are you looking at right now? Several complexes in the area offer roommate matching services.

We just signed a lease with Sycamore Lane Apartments in Central Davis.

  10. That's so strange. It's almost like they will know the answer before, but they just aren't going to tell you until then.

It's an administrative notification. It's their way letting you know that their IT team is working to upload the results from your department. I actually prefer this method to the endless wait.
