I did my undergrad and masters at Auburn. It's a great small town and I really enjoyed it. Tiger Transit can take you to the campus but it wont take you anywhere else so I wouldn't rely on it as transportation other than to and from campus. Most things are in walking distance if you live downtown though. Kroger (grocery) is only 1.5 miles at the most from the university and easily walkable if you live in between them. Most of the things to do revolve around nature, sports, or going out. There's a movie theatre in town but mostly it is small town life.

What Program? I'm starting in Genetics. I know a lot of places allow pets I have a cat and I'm going to live in the Woodlands next year. A lot of places will accept pets with a fee you just have to talk to them.

Who else will be attending the University of Georgia come Fall 2011. I will be starting a PhD in the Genetics department and am currently trying to find a place to live. I'm excited to meet any and all future UGA grad students!

Requirements for admission into a PhD program in biomedical sciences

You are definately going to want to get the GRE score up. For an international the verbal doesn't count as much (take the TOEFL)Abut they are going to want to see mid to high 700's in the quant sections. As far as not publishing, many schools understand that not all undergrads are in positions or labs that would allow them to publish based on how many grad students and post docs are in the lab. As long as you can get strong recs I dont believe it's a big deal. -
How competitive are bioinformatics grad programs?

I called Georgia Tech today to see if they have extended all the interview invites and apparently they are in the process of reviewing my app right now. ::Crossing Fingers:: -

I got a rejection letter from them today =\ -
I was just accepted at UAB- Biochem on Friday! It's a great program and everyone in the department is really nice! I know they are still doing interviews and reviewing applications once a month. Good luck!

Just got my first acceptance at UAB! Hope this means that there are many more to follow!

That is UAB BSB. -
It also depends on where your program is, the program I am in now is at a vet school so I have seen people use anything from mice, cats, dogs, deer. If they are using these animals to look at degenerative disease then yes, they get put down when they reach the humane threshold. This will also happen in Ag Programs, there are many biochemistry and micro programs hidden in Ag programs and many times these programs involve putting down animals as well. However, I dont really see this so much in pure science departments, but in animal departments and some applied departments you will see it. I personally work in a lab that's politics don't support animal research in which the animals get put down, but my PI is a Vet who is an extreme animal lover. But I have seen some researchers that are at medical schools who do gene therapy with mice models and mice will have to be put down. @Bio Bio the "permit" is called IACUC

It looks like someone got an interview at WUSTL for Cancer Bio. I'm hoping to hear something from Genetics and Mol. Bio. (GMB)

Nothing yet from Dartmouth, are they done sending invites? I have a lower GPA from my undergrad and i don't know how much that hurts, I got some accommodations and now have a 4.0 in grad study. The my first author article was only submitted at the time of application but now it's in press.. I don't know how much that changes things though or if i should notify schools of that. On the upside I heard from UGA Genetics today and interview weekend is Jan. 27-29.

That sounds like biochemistry/structural biology or pharmacology programs. Sometimes you won't just find these types of things in obvious places like computational biology programs a lot of schools have one or two researchers who may in particularly do these types of things but not enough faculty to actually warrant a formal program dedicated to it. I for instance am interested in RNA modeling, and really had to pick through programs sometimes to find people who do that.
