  1. Hello, I'm wonder if anyone has information on living in Halifax Nova Scotia, and perhaps more specifically at Dalhousie University. I'm from the absolute opposite side of North America so I'm totally in the dark. Thank you in advances!

  2. Harbinger of things to come? I am forcing myself to get out of the house and away from this site and my email for a while!

Yea I got stuck in a "refresh loop" last night and again this morning....and there was little sleep between!

  3. I looked at that a while back, but it doesn't really say what has changed. I guess what I mean is, why are they now likely to take significantly fewer students than before?

I think this part is why:

"The graduate program in history is small, highly selective, and especially well supported by the University. If a student is admitted, the University will provide a competitive financial package that will include a stipend for living expenses, remission of tuition, and cover fees and health insurance."

More attention and funding means fewer students. Plus if you look at last years results for UVA the number of acceptances seemed extremely high for a top school.

  4. Received A funded (Canadian) Masters acceptance in early British Atlantic history, but I can't help but hope for that phD! Come on already, Virginia, Michigan, Et al. !

  5. Hey HistoryGrizzly, I don't know about omens, but I like you have a car (an 1984) that's about ready to die. I'm planning to live without a car through graduate school, and hopefully (If Fortuna smiles upon us) we'll both get accepted and live lives free of car problems for a while.

  6. I've received two emails from prospective advisers recently and both were labeled as spam by Gmail, one was in there for a day and a half !!! So make sure you guys check your spam.

  7. Hello Everyone, I have two unofficial master programs acceptances and was hoping to get some opinions on one year versus two year master programs. (both schools have PhD programs and, I have been assured, will offer full funding) So disregarding all other factors what do you think are the advantages and disadvantages of the one year versus two year programs? Thank you in advance for your feedback.

  8. yep, means nothing. i had that message in my wolverine account, and i didn't get accepted to michigan.

I was not implying that it is related to acceptance verses rejection, just the possible date of decisions / notification.

  9. I'm not really sure how good of an indicator it is for when admission results will go out, but I was messing about on the university of Michigan website and found this message in my financial aid section of the Wolverine access,

Welcome to the University of Michigan Financial Planning Calculators for:

Entering students, check back after February 14. Continuing students may check after May15.

Any one have some inside insight?

  10. K Ryan, may I ask which professor you applied to work with at NYU? I'm in early American/colonial as well and was just wondering...

I focused on Dr. Morgan in my statement of purpose, but on the application it asked for two adviser suggestions and I also put Dr. Kupperman. How about you?

  11. That NYU post is seriously driving me mad. It says American history, would anyone like to take credit and maybe clarify what area of American history, because I am early American/ Colonial.

  12. Your Princeton application may be a bit misplaced... I'm also in early American and when I contacted professors in the department they told me that Princeton was no place for an early Americanist seeing as how the department doesn't even have a dedicated one on the faculty.

I also worried about the reputation of my undergraduate school, but all of my mentors told me that it would not play much of a factor at all.

Did you or your advisor(s) make contact with prospective advisors in any of these departments?

I was hoping to work with Dr.Barbara Oberg at Princeton, but to be honest I didn't check to see how involved, if at all, she is with grad students. I did a lot of Jefferson specific research and that's her area.

  13. Hello, I am applying to 9 graduate schools, 3 MA programs and 6 PhD programs, for early American including several top schools. My question is how important your undergraduate institution is for the application process.

I attended a California State University that is far from prestigious and I'm concerned that graduate programs might disregard my application simply on this basis.

Other than that my application is very solid 3.96 GPA, 620V, 660Q, 5.5, and a really good writing sample.

    Thank You for any feedback
