  1. All good advice! I would add that you need to have a few thoughts on future research projects with your POI. This was hugely important for my interviews. It came up so many times, and not only with my POI, but other faculty members as well. Especially great, were the times other faculty would get excited by the fact that I had some ideas and they wanted to contribute to them!

Other than that, relax and be yourself! Because the truth is.... we want to impress you as much as you want to impress us. So generally, interviews will be a bit more relaxed than you anticipated. Yes, you will have that one awkward interview with a faculty member, but it isn't the end of the world. It is only one person. And try to enjoy it! You are in your dream situation, talking to experienced people in an area you want experience!! Take advantage and Good Luck!

  2. Thanks for the advice! I am sure I will have more questions as I progress!

Do not rent from either Apartments Downtown or Kacena Real Estate Management. Both of these companies have bad reputations on campus. The former has a class-action lawsuit filed against them (yeah, I know, right?), and the latter is sleazy. I would stay away from the "downtown-side" of Dodge and Benton streets. This is where undergraduates drink and party. University Heights, on the other side of the river, is nice, but you will need someone to split the rent. Personally, I would not live near Willow Creek Park--if murders happen in IC, they happen around that area. I know a lot of people who live on the far east side of IC in newer condo units, which are nice. They just take the bus to campus--semester passes are $40.

I'm just finishing my first year at Iowa in a dumpy apartment in Coralville. I know that I am generalizing, but Coralville (south of the interstate) is full of large apartment complexes. It is not the best situation, especially because you just don't know who your neighbors will be (impoverished grad students who read all the time, or Goodyear mechanics who party all the time, you really take a chance). But I am about to move to a house in the Longfellow neighborhood-- south and east of Governor and Burlington.

  3. So I accepted the offer from Iowa! I am plannign on going to Iowa City in the next month or so to check ou tthe housing situation. What exactly comprises downtown? I want to live close, but not in the craziness. I've heard it has calmed down since a law passed not allowing anyone under 21 in any of the bars past 11 or 12 (not sure on the timing).

  4. I haven't made my final decision yet, but it looks like I will probably be moving to Iowa City as well! I've been looking at housing, but have no idea what neighborhoods would be good for a grad student, yet still near campus and most importantly.... walkable!!! I do have a car, but currently live in a city that is 100% vehicle dependant and I am looking to drive much less! Any thoughts?

  5. Being overdressed is ALWAYS preferable to being underdressed, in any situation! My very Southern, society driven, Emily Post loving garndmother has made this clear to me since birth.

I would suggest a suit, especially if it fits correctly, as pointed out by the previous poster.

  6. I know the chances are very slim of me getting an interview, but a girl can dream right???!!! I applied to a few programs last year and got all rejections, so this seems like a move in the right direction.

I applied to 15 programs this year, so hopefully I will get at least one intervierw.

Thanks and good luck to everyone!

  7. I got my first response from Clinical Psych programs today (UGA) and from the e-mail, I am not sure if I was waitlisted or rejected! So I asked some current graduate students and they had mixed opinions as well.

The letter goes something like this....

You have not been selected for an interview at this time...

    Your application will remain active...

The chances of getting an interview are now low...

You will receive offical notification in the fall...

    Thoughts????

  8. I have yet to hear back from any programs, while another student in my lab has already been asked to interview at two schools (Oklahoma State and Kent, Clinical). I just want some news, any news, even if it is bad news! All the waiting and constant checking makes my stomach hurt.

That being said, I have heard the same as what is being posted here..... a majority of interview invitations will be extended late Jan/ early Feb.

Good luck everyone....unless you applied to the same programs I did, in which case I hope they lost your application ;) I kid, I kid!
