most of my decisions have come in, and now i'm in a bit of a dilemma.. due to funding issues, my choice of schools really lies between getting an MS at Umass amherst or a phd at northeastern. i mostly applied to MS programs this year, with NEU being the only phd. the thing is, i don't know if i want to do a phd or not yet. it sounds interesting, but i dont have enough research experience to know if ill enjoy it enough to complete a phd program. my intention was to do an MS first and then pursue a phd if i felt it suited me
the MS is not funded, but because i'm an mass resident, umass with living expenses is going to cost me about 40-50k for the whole degree. sounds cheap compared to other schools i know, but thats like all my savings from 4 years of penny pinching. on the other hand, as with most phd programs, NEU offers a full tuition waiver and stipend.
UMass MS
better reputation
gives me the chance to find out if i want to do research or not before committing to a phd
possible that i may be able to get an assistantship after i enroll
NEU PhD
guaranteed funding
may save time if my ultimate goal is a phd? (if i get an MS from umass first and then decide to do a Phd, won't it take longer?)
would probably get more attention as a phd student here than as a MS student at UMass
id really appreciate any input you guys have. thanks!

have you spoken with any professors from UNC? it might be a good idea to ask them about this. they might be able to tell you whether or not you should be concerned about funding after the first year

It looks like all the acceptances are going out now then, I think...and the rest of us will be getting rejections at a much later date. Oh well.
i think theres still hope.. if the application deadline has been extended to the end of this month, there must still be some space left. good luck!

Looks like someone got into the Columbia Masters program today...check the results forum. Maybe they are doing rolling admissions now?
i got the acceptance email today as well. applied way back in november. i guess they *are* doing rolling

I applied only to two schools: NYU and Columbia, both in New York. Does anyone have any experience with the masters programs at these schools? How long does it generally take for them to come back with a decision?
based on historical data, nyu results should start coming out this week. columbia usually would have started responding by now, but it looks like they've extended the MS application deadline. i'm guessing that means we'll be waiting until april

wow 27k is a lot
i think it also depends on whether it's a 9 month or 12 month assistantship

two of my friends got admitted yesterday. good luck!
they got admitted to the MS program? i know there are some PhD admissions, but i haven't heard of any MS ones yet

i'm curious as to how all of you kept all your school info (gre scores, transcripts, application deadlines, links, emails, etc) organized during the application process
i set up a local wiki for info like schools, deadlines, links; and a dropbox account for files like transcripts and my SOP. it worked pretty well for me. whatd you guys do?

I'm ridiculously torn between CMU and Georgia Tech... will probably have to make a spreadsheet and talk my friends' ears off for the next month or so.
congrats! thats a great dilemma to be in

thanks for the advice! i havent had the call yet, but ill let you all know how it goes

weird. just got an email from columbia asking if i still wanted to be considered for the MS program (i applied to the MS program). did everyone else get this too?

i have an phone interview with a prof for a research position this fall as an MS student. any thoughts on how to prep? thanks

anyone attending the umass open house today?

Just to follow up on this - here's a listing from Microsoft Academic Search of top AI authors: http://academic.rese...start=1&end=100 Of course this is only one way of listing and I don't think you should look at it as the best listing or a ranking per se.
awesome thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the replies. However, I was actually thinking to apply for fall'11.
northeastern (3/15), brown (5/31), and upenn (6/1) are all still open. but as you probably already know, with quotas filling up, the admission committees are likely to be more selective at this point

I know for machine learning, you have Andrew Barto - he's the head of department I believe, but I think he's close to retirement. Sridhar Mahadevan is pretty well regarded and they also have Andrew McCallum and Hanna Wallach, who are well regarded up and coming researchers in the field.
a long overdue thanks for the info!
just curious, where do you get this kind of info from? are you just up to date on AI research activity? or is there some website that you can find out frequently cited researchers?
thanks again!

Thanks. I'm not sure if the purpose was to notify me or if it was as a final verification just to make sure that our interests were aligned and that I was interested in attending. He discussed his research interests and I did mine as well and where they overlapped, and he gauged my interest in attending UMich. It was only at the end that he said that he was confident that I'd be getting an offer later this week.
In any case, he said that they were looking over applications now, so I'm guessing most offers should go out later this week or next. I also get the impression that they do admit people without interviews, since there seem to be a few admits on the results board from this year and last that don't mention interviews.
congrats newms! given your status as the most active poster in the forum, im sure hundreds of people around the world were just waiting for you to get your first accept

I've wrote greasemonkey script that removes masters entries from results.
// ==UserScript==
// @name thegradcafe remove masters script
// @description removes all masters entries on results page
// @include http://thegradcafe.com/*
// @include http://www.thegradcafe.com/*
// ==/UserScript==
var tmp = document.getElementsByTagName('tr');
for (i=0;i<tmp.length;i++){
if(!(tmp.innerHTML.match(/
[^<]*

[^P]*PhD[^<]*

[^<]*

[^<]*

[^<]*
/))){
tmp.parentNode.removeChild(tmp);
i = i - 1;
}
cool script. had to make some changes for it to work on chrome (plus i wanted to remove the phd entries instead of ms ), but works nicely now

That's a good point--I heard ETS changed the policy to allow score choice for the SAT, though I didn't know that they let you do that for the GRE. Thanks for the tip.
just to clarify, you can't choose individual scores to send.. its either all general test scores or all subject test schools: http://www.ets.org/gre/general/scores/send

does anyone know who some of the more well known AI professors/research groups at Umass amherst are? thanks in advance

THank you very much for replying. I shall be very grateful if you could please help in this regard. Ya, I have my another schools to look forward to but UIUC was my prime choice.
What is the procedure for applying for TA?
Should I contact a professor expressing my research interests??
For the past 2-3 years, seniors from my college have been securing admission with full aid at UIUC. (ie with RA).
Will some prof contact me for RA as the initial mail says " Faculty members would contact you"??
Thanking you
out of curiosity, which other schools are offering aid for MS?
from the portions of the emails that you posted, it sounds to me like faculty members will *not* be contacting you about research interests anymore. i think your questions about TA procedure and contacting professors would best be answered by someone from their computer science department
good luck!

"At this time, we are unable to provide any funding assistance. There may be a possibility to secure a teaching or research assistantship pending availability for this upcoming academic year. There are other units on campus that may be offering assistantships if you are looking for one. "
hi dilgau. congrats on the admit!
i would contact a few different people from the department and ask them each for their unofficial opinion on your chances of landing funding after the school year starts. at least that would give you an idea of how much risk you are taking by enrolling without guaranteed funding.
do you have any other schools that would be an option? if not, then it might not be so difficult a decision.

"90% of the applicants I get have a 800Q," she said. "But your verbal score? That makes me raise my eyebrows. I almost never see applicants with a verbal score like that." (She's in engineering.)
just curious, what constitutes a eyebrow raising verbal score?
i agree that having a killer verbal score would make one stand out, if not just for the fact that it means the applicant put a lot of effort into studying.
i think dallas is just trying to say that it's not a dealbreaker to have an average verbal score if you are competitive in the other criteria. this seems to be especially true in computer science, where international students make up a large percentage of the application pool

{help me}CS Master: Penn(CGGT) vs Brown (I've got these two and no other better choice)
How to make a decision???
orientation: get a job in the states after graduate and don't wanna pursue a phd degree
Penn(CG n' game technology, nonthesis-based): It is one of the few top 50 schools which have the master specialized in game. On the other hand, it narrows the type of job you can find. Though I have kinda special interest in game, I don't know the future of mine in terms of game or movie industry. Additionally, as the number of the admitted cs master students in penn is huge, some people regard it as a less valuable admission. But no one can deny that Penn has a good fame and you can enjoy the good social network of the schoolmates of Penn at work.
Brown: the normal cs master you can decide it as nonthesis-absed or thesis-based. It gives less admissions than penn and the size of school is rather small. However,it is near Boston(a perfect place for finding a job in terms of cs) and Emma Watson studies there.(a joke~~ ) However, the number of graduates from Brown cs is such small that it's hard for you to find some schoolmates which may help you to some extent in companies. In my opinion, Brown is a better place for you to pursue Phd degree after graduation there, because it can provide enough opportunities for research and professor's guide in your master time.
So please help me analyse it a little and make a decision.
congrats!
random thoughts:
- i think upenn is a little cheaper (5k per year i believe) if that makes any difference
- philly and providence are very different cities--you might want to read up on them both or maybe even visit
- youre probably better off with a general CS degree if youre not looking to go into gaming specifically
- although brown's cs dept is smaller, that also means you get more attention from the faculty and get to know your peers better than in a larger dept
personally, i would choose brown. i know a few people that went to brown for their MS. they all really liked it, and they all ended up with great jobs after graduation. on the other hand, i don't know any upenn cs grads so i can't really compare fairly based on that criteria.
check out this thread--a brown phd student talks a bit about the school, dept, and area:
northeastern phd or umass ms?

thanks for the responses--i'll be pondering over this over the next few weeks..
