  1. Anyone know anything about the PhD program at Old Dominion. It's a new program (first cohort was 2005 I believe). Does anyone know anything about it? Like dyanmics, environment ect...Because it's so new, it's hard to find data on it (I already know it isn't "ranked"--it's too new among other things). Any help would be appreciated.

  2. Alas, I believe it does. I was rejected last year and didn't hear anything. I received an e-mail with my rejection letter attached on Feb 24 (last year). Sorry! And I am sure you'll receive good news from some other great programs. Who wants to go to Penn anyway!

  3. Yeah, all told I'll probably have spent 3k on everything (paid for a stats class). If we get in and get funded it's a small investment that will pay off, but if we don't it's just another blow to the solar plexus.

You're right--I applied to 13 schools and spent between $1,300-$1,500 total between sending out transcripts, scores, writing samples and the works. But it really is just a small investment with a huge pay-off as soon as you get a nice offer. I was bored and doing some math this weekend and determined that the average award package (out-of-state tutition+fees, health insurance and stipend) for the schools I applied to is right around $40,500 a year. When I think of that, the $1,500 I spent on apps is totally put into perspective (at least, now that I've received a few offers).

And solar plexus blows=lame, but they happen.

  4. That's awesome! I'm planning on going, but I still have to confirm my schedule by tomorrow. Are you going to the visitation weekend?

Yeah, I just RSVP'd. Any idea on how many of us there will be?

  5. GRE scores (as problematic as they are) are really the only way a department can clearly quantify you against other applicants. Letters of rec, GPA, SOP's are all subjective. In my current department, if an applicants quantative score is less than 600, they will be rejected unless the applicant has peer-reviewed pubs. It sucks, but that's just the way it is. Sure, stronger GPA/strong letters of rec will help offset low GRE scores, but ultimately, the magic 1200 score is pretty standard to get into a solid PhD progrm.

  6. I just found this site today (though I wish I had earlier, I could have used the help and support while putting my applications together).

But I've heard back from two schools and I've been accepted to both: Temple and University of Oklahoma (full funding). I'm still waiting for seven more schools though. But either way, I'm excited!

Hey! I got into Oklahoma with funding, too. Are you going to the visitation on 3/3-3/5?

  7. I also have a dilemma about this too.

I'm still weighing between pros and cons of different schools in different states.

Yeah! And that has been a suprisingly big issue for me. I don't have family ties anywhere, the offers are all about the same (4 years of funding). I've gotten into a few schools that I could see myself at, but they are in completely different areas (NE, SW, and Mid-West).

  8. Curious how other people are handling multiple admissions. If you get into one of your first choices early on in the application process, should you notify the your other choices? I'm in a bit of a quandary: I've applied to 11 schools, and I've already gotten a 4 year fellowship at my number 3 choice. There's really no way I'd go to any of the schools below this one.

The rational side of me informs me to consider all offers on the table--maybe one of the "lower" programs will give me either a stellar offer, or something might really click on a campus visit or interview. On the other hand, especially having been through this process before for my MA, I am leaning towards notifying the lower schools so that 1) they don't waste time or resource trying to recruit someone who isn't going to attend, and 2) so that other applicants can receive offers of funding in a timely manner.

Thoughts? How are others in this situation dealing with this dilemma?

  9. Sure, no prob. (Im an undergrad btw)

    3.97 Overall GPA

    4.0 Soc GPA

    620V

    600Q

    4AW

Strong letters of rec. No publications. One semester of TA experience. Two semesters of research experience.

Great, thanks for letting me know. I'm waiting on pins and needles now!

  10. Yeah, I know, it is odd. Let her know you've been advised by a former instructor that the deadline to be considered for funding is Feb 15th. PM me and we can touch base outside of the public forum if this is something you are interested in.

  11. Thanks, SocCard. However, when I looked at their website it said that the deadline is November 15th. Do you have information to the contrary?

Hmmmmm....I see where it says that on the website. However, I believe that is incorrect. If you are interested, em-ail Jonetta Weber at jonettaweber@louisville.edu to double check. I do know that the graduate committee has not met yet.
