1. I'm thinking a "match" system--like that of U.S. medical residency admissions--would work wonders for graduate programs. Basically, this involves a centralized application system where the applicant inputs a list of programs ranked by preference, and the individual programs also rank the applications they get by preference. And on April 15th, the system runs the algorithm and "matches" students to programs. So, a student would get one--and only one--acceptance for the entire application cycle (i.e., take it or leave it), and the grad schools won't need to scramble to cover gaps left by applicants who decline an offer.

I completely support this system. By this the applicant will be happy to get the school according to his/her preference and even the University will be happy to get a student whom they wanted. The applicant will also be well aware of his/her in terms of preference and will be able to decide where he/she wants to go well in advance before applying. No redundant admissions so everyone is happy.

  2. I absolutely agree with the point that admissions should be less based on the intangibles. There are some schools where it is next to impossible to find a superstar professor who could write a recommendation for you. Not all schools have superstar professors. Also when we try to get in contact with some star professor some where else, no matter how relevant our e-mails are they never reply to our mails. So again one more intangible comes into picture and that is "luck". If you are lucky enough to get in touch with a professor then you have the chance, otherwise how passionate you are about doing a phd makes no sense to them. But the matter of the fact is we are the applicants and we have no authority to do anything but to just accept the decision whatever it might be. So in my opinion this thread can be of a good use to just let out our frustrations because after all we will not be able to change anything.

  3. Congrats Ujjawal. I am still awaiting the decision. I really hope that they accept me.

Thanks beans but i think I made a mistake in posting the message. I have seen the acceptance on the gradcafe result board. There was another acceptance posted on gradcafe results board this morning.

I am in the same boat with you. I am still awaiting the acceptance. My application is in review since feb1. But we can hope some decision soon now.

  4.

Perhaps, you could write a professionally-looking supplement to your transcript, describing what each course actually was. I would emphasize: as professionally looking as possible: good stylistics, good design, good paper, and signed/stamped by your undergraduate institution.

Perhaps, you could send that supplement to adcoms asap if your application is already submitted. All the best!

yes, but the problem is I have applied for Ph.D. in computer science and my applications are probably already in review. So what should I do now? Should I write a mail to them and send the link to university's web page where all the subjects are listed with detailed coursework?

  5. Hello friends,

Actually it just came to my notice that in my transcripts some courses in maths are not listed with clarity. for example, it will be only listed as mathematics - 1 instead of linear algebra and graph theory. Calculus as maths -2, etc. A course in optimization techniques "Computer based optimization methods" is simply listed as CBOM(how the adcoms going to know what does it stands for!). Actually these courses are among prerequisites at the schools I have applied to. So someone please suggest me what should I do. I am still awaiting decisions from these schools

    Can it affect my chances?

    Someone please reply

  6. I just saw this post and I just want to ask: if you are accepted to both schools, which one will you go to?

I was accepted for admission from UVa (with funding) in Feb and was invited for a visit to OSU last week so if things go well, OSU might just offer me the admission as well. I think I might have to make this decision in the coming week.

    Thanks,

I am not sure about where I will be going as I am a foreign student so I will be having difficulty in knowing the pros and cons of the two cities. As of now I will be a bit inclined towards UVA because there are many good professors working in my area of interest. But if I get admit in both of them then I will definitely check for the funding difference from both universities, living costs, students life because we need to spend a good 6 years there. you are in US so it should be easy for you to think about it. But I will be more inclined to UVA because of my interest.

    congrats for your admit.

  7. I'm sorry but I don't know anything else. My approach has always been to try to find a professor that I can communicate with and have similar interests, and then apply to the schools where I've found professors that seem interested in me. After applying, you're kind of stuck until you get admitted. After getting admitted I then focus on finding a research assistantship by contacting the professors that I previously mentioned. If I were in your shoes, I would try,it's tough I know, to not get too worried and maybe contact departments once per month to see where you stand.

Ya its tough but it takes some pain to get an admit to Phd. I mailed to some professors mentioning about my research interests and also some research papers of the professor that I enjoyed reading. But I was not lucky enough to get reply. Anyways I will keep continue waiting and will try to do as you mentioned. Thank you so much. you have been a great help.

  8. I received a form letter e-mail from an administrative assistant in the department. I had been in contact with a professor prior to my admission, but he has never spoken to me about my admission, only about research interests.

Thanks fangsout, Your information is very helpful. Actually I am very nervous at this moment. I have heard that they admit people as late as june, but being a foreign student it will be a problem due to visa issues. Do you know anything more that will be useful for me?

  9. There were about 15 people at visitation weekend. Yes, I got a teaching assistantship. Most people I talked with seemed set on UVA, but there were a couple with offers from higher ranked schools, so they may free up some funding if they choose elsewhere.

can you tell me that your acceptance mail came from the professor or the department? were you in contact with the POI or some professor?

  10. I have also applied to the same area in both schools that you have. Have you heard anything from them or from any Professor in those schools?

No I haven't heard anything yet. But I think the people who have heard from UVA have applied to graphics, theory. I haven't yet come across anyone accepted for wireless sensors and networks. And from what I know the admit about 20 people every year and 14 of them have attended the visiting weekend. Its going to be tough getting in unless some nice guys who got offers from higher ranked universities choose to decline the the offer from UVA.

  11. I applied to both UVA and OSU. I got an admit in early February from UVA and went to their visitation weekend last week. I have not heard anything back from OSU.

Ya I figured it out, from your replies to adinutzyc. Congrats on your admit. By the how many of you were at the visiting weekend? Have you got funding?

  12. I also applied to UVA and have not heard anything back from them. :( The last interview weekend for my intended program (MII) is around March 10-12. So I am not really keeping my hopes up. In which program did you apply?

I applied to Computer science. CS also had a visiting weekend in the last week of feb. Yet to hear anything from them.

  13. Is there anyone who has heard anything from UVA or OSU? I have seen a few acceptance for UVA and OSU on results board already in feb. I had also talked with some successful UVA applicants and they provided a good lot of information. But i am very anxious now and going mad of all this waiting. I haven't came across many applicants for these universities on the forum. They are my last hope. so people who are waiting on any of these universities, please post anything useful that you may have. Please share your thoughts on any of these two.

    Thank you.

  14. Has anyone heard from UNC or NCSU for Computer Science MS? What are the funding chances there?

The chances of funding are not very good at NCSU. They give more preference to PhD students than MS students. I have already heard from NCSU in feb 1st week. I had applied for PhD CS. I got rejected.

But I think I saw some posts on the results board for NCSU masters. I can't say anything about UNC.

Best of luck with your applications.

  15. I've applied to the CS departement at UofT, but still didn't hear from them. They started to send out their decisions at January. On the other hand, they promised to be done by the end of March, so I probably have another month to suffer the uncertainty...

I wonder if there is any reliable way to check my status online.

In the DCS form I only have my transcipts checkbox marked, but neither GRE nor TOEFL checkboxes were checked (other univesity got all my grades by the begining of January)...

On the graduate school site I have "Documents pending" status. Is this a reason I still didn't hear anything?

Those of you who have been accepted (or rejected) - did you have you status updated online?

I haven't applied to UofT but i think you should contact the graduate program secretary at UofT as soon as possible and report about such a problem with your application. You should bring this thing in their notice. Its too long now and if the status still shows some documents pending then there might be some problem. By the way when did you submitted your application?

  16. ok, it happens. I am doing BE Computer Science. The potential to research is what matters.

Let's hope. Do you have any idea about what time OSU an UVA sends notification about admissions?

May be you have talked with any of your other fiends. are you having any friends in US??

  17. I am from Delhi College of Engineering and have few publications.

You did bsc physics and msc computers from same place?

ya from the same place. I think not having publications may hamper my chances.

But I dont think it is a major issue for universities outside top 10.

But the rejection from NCSU has scared me a bit.

In which subject you have done your graduation?
