  1. - I'm officially a Europeanist, but applied through History of Science since my current research focus lies in historical geography/cartography. - @infalliblekitty: Congratulations!!! Who might you be working with? Gordon Wood?
  2. Oops - I did misread. Best of luck however!
  3. I'm so sorry to those who weren't admitted. I should note that I was rejected from several other top programmes, so it really does seem to be up to each school, individually (not a reflection on candidate qualifications).
  4. My most heartfelt congratulations to Bukharan and Barricades...perhaps I will meet you in the fall?
  5. Just notified that I've been admitted to Princeton!!!! Now, how do I choose? Admitted: Princeton (PhD), Oxford (MPhil), Cambridge (MPhil)
  6. Congratulations to both of you!
  7. Many thanks for your excellent advice (and to emerson and jeppe as well). My subfield is British and Modern European. PhD-wise, a similar track, although I want to be more globally-focused. I'll be better-able to decide once details come in from both. And, indeed, of course I am still waiting to hear from the three American programs. As for Wisconsin - they do seem to be trickling them out, don't they?!
  8. And...I've stumbled into the Oxford vs. Cambridge debate. Round 3,450. I've been trying to get my mind off the American schools by trying to decide whether Oxford or Cambridge would be the better path. Same subfield, but Oxford is a 2-year programme (Cambridge is a single year). Oxford seemed to have put more thought into advisors, but both schools tout their respective departments as the best in Europe...
  9. Re: Cambridge - Oh? I honestly didn't know.
  10. The First Class Honours degree, in my (albeit limited experience) is considered equivalent to a Summa cum Laude, so I don't see why they would downgrade that. As for the GRE scores, with history programmes they are honestly reviewed with a big grain of salt. Generally-speaking, if one's score is abnormally higher or lower than the average, they might take a second look, but overall they don't factor much in the admissions process. It is much more important to have outstanding grades, LORs, and accomplishments. That's at least what my POIs have discussed with me. Which British institution did you complete your BA at (if I might ask)?
  11. ?
  12. Hoping for Magdalen, since my mentor was a student there.
  13. At Cambridge, I got into Trinity ( ). Oxford's placement is still pending (and I'm waiting to hear about the Clarendon Scholarship). I'm assuming that an Oxbridge MPhil (I'm currently leaning towards Oxford...) will be well-respected by top US PhD programmes?
  14. Since I'm just out of my BA program, I applied to the M.Phil programs at Oxford and Cambridge (Modern British & European History). I'm assuming from your D.Phil acceptance (congratulations, by the way!) that you already have an MA or M.Phil?
  15. Many thanks, modern So, it sounds as if it's personal decisions on the part of professors whether they wish to contact prospective choices...hopefully that will work in our favor, and we'll both get nods! Good luck! How are you passing the time (other than thegradcafe)?
  16. I'm keeping my fingers crossed Also, as for the Yale interviewee post, I wonder if it was just one professor asking a candidate for further information...? Speculating out of nerves, haha. For those who applied to Harvard, is it acceptable if one completed the financial form in mid-January (but sent in everything else before the December 15th deadline)?
  17. And, good luck ticklemepink! Seriously! I think I'm going to have to go distract myself too...
  18. Ah, but I should note that my current research focus is very, ehm...oddball...which means that there may not be many available faculty More my fault than anything else, really... I wonder if that Yale interviewee was a joke? Perhaps?
  19. Oh, now I'm really worried I didn't even know Yale conducted interviews? Are they always a prerequisite to admission? Since I'm in the thick of it, I have no idea about my chances. Like everyone else here, I'm worrying myself sick. I only applied to five programs: Oxford: Accepted Cambridge: Accepted Harvard: Yale: Princeton: Hopefully five was sufficient. Stats-wise, I was 3.83 overall gpa/4.00 major gpa from top university 2 major sole-author publications (both in undergrad), latter one in very prestigious journal Two co-authorships with world-renowned professor (all in undergrad) Recipient, national graduate humanities scholarship Founder, nationally-distributed research journal LORs from 2 renowned professors, university president Professional exhibition management experience University history honors + research grants + PBK (the norm for people on this site, seemingly). Now I feel queasy even mentioning these things..
  20. Ah, so the East Asian Studies program conducts interviews, but not the department of history. I was starting to get worried...
  21. No, no that's quite all right - I'm still very much in the dark as well. I'm only going on what the first responder said. I haven't heard from Princeton, but since no one mentioned HYP history reviews on other posts, I thought I should ask. I'm assuming they don't normally offer them. PS - RDX: Did you apply in the January cohort at Oxford and Cambridge? What MPhil programme did you apply for?
  22. So when might one hear about Princeton history department interviews (if at all)?
  23. Do Harvard, Yale and Princeton universities generally conduct interviews? Or, do they rely more on the SOI for personal information, character, etc?
