1. @ esraetna I will be at the colorado gateway too.
2. make that three... I am still waiting for an acceptance, I am a bit worried now. Anyways, good luck to all that are still waiting!
3. Hey all, I see it is getting busy here :-). Congrats to all who actually know something now! I got my first semi-positive message today. After beeing in contact wth a professor (he contected me) I have been wait listed by Columbia University. Is this any good news at all? Two other applications are still pending but i am slowly loosing my sanity... Just wanted to share this, remyxomatosis
4. it is the same for me, up to 25,000. that is what you get. there are a lot of schools with tution exceeding this amount. however, they told us that with phd studies, you will typically get a waiver after the first year (the way the put it was, if you dont get the waiver they dont want you). I´m really uneasy now, having been rejected by 2 of my 5 choices, with 3 applications still pending. at least one acceptance would ease my mind a LOT. Anyways, good nerves for all the others waiting out there!
5. I just wanted to share the info: I got my first rejection today, but the email from the IIE says that the other 4 applications are still pending. So hang in there everyone!
6. Yes I think so, as far as i know this comes with the J-1 exchange visa. You could however continue your education after the Phd (e.g. postdoc) and the two year rule would then apply after you have finished your education (it is not directly connected to finishing the PhD).
7.

Thats what I am thinking too, it is just a little frustrating when i can see at the gradcafe results blog, that all of my selected schools have already accepted (and rejected) a lot of people. It would just be a relief to hear something, since you are going to loose the scholarship if none of the universities accepts you.
8. Hey, I am also a Fulbright Student applying for a PhD in the fall. Exept from one email from a professor (which actually got sent to me via the IIE) I have not heard anything as of yet. When we had a meeting with the local commission they told us that we typically get informed around the end of march. I hate the wait, since the whole process with the IIE is rather lacking transparency. But what can you do...
9. Thank you for your answers neuropsych76 and Langoustine! To be honest, I never considered that some gradschools wont take new students every year. Anyways, I figure since the IIE went along with my applications that I am going to be fine. Now I really need to relax... Thank you again, Remyxomatosis
10. Hello everybody, I discovered this discussion forum recently, and it really helped me out (partly because now I feel I am not alone with all my questions). My question may be slightly off-topic, however i believe it fits best into this subforum. I am a chemistry student in Vienna, Austria (finished my MSc in June 2010) and have applied for a PhD in Materials Science at the following schools: Columbia, UCSB, Northwestern, Pen State and to the University of North Carolina. Since I am a Fulbright Scholar, most of the application process is handled by the Institute of International Education (IIE). They strictly told me that I should not interfere with their negotiations, especially financial aspects (RAs, TAs,...). However, I heard that it is quite usual in the US to introduce oneself at the Universities one has applied for. Is this really the case? Do I need to visit the Schools prior to the application decisions? When searching around I could only find information from Northwestern. They explicitly write in their FAQs NOT to contact any faculty prior to the admission decission. But what about the other schools? Can someone tell me if I should catch a flight and visit the faculties there? In the european university system you would never do that, if you are not invited to. Thats why it took me by surprise when I heard about this. I hope that someone can help me with my question, thank you remyxomatosis
