I don't think is reasonable to assume that you got rejected because you haven't heard anything yet. Especially after making that assumption about RISD. You don't know until you know. In response to your question, I got an email and they said that a letter will be sent. I don't see why the letter is necessary... I wonder what it is about my application that they deemed unworthy... it could be that I'm too young (early 20s) or from an engineering background, but they said that they've had students from both of those demographics before. By the way, what is the apx age and background of everyone else? I'm assuming it comes down to the portfolio, and although they say they take varied backgrounds, a background that illustrates thinking with visually-oriented results is given more value than anything. Seems a little antithetical to their claim to welcome varied backgrounds. Yeah, I'm bitter, but it's been less than 24 hours. Fuck it. Ottawa seems like such a let-down compared to Brooklyn... with respect to sources of inspiration and like-minded people anyhow. Prickly Pear, what have you heard that makes you say Carleton has a great program? It'd be good to know all that I can as I decide whether to accept or not. I'm wondering if it might be better to just work for a couple of years (or indefinitely). Since my ultimate goal is to start my own business eventually, maybe it's best to get experience and stop distracting myself with checkpoint-tye goals and instead just get to it. I still haven't had the drink that this calls for. Once I get that over with I'll quit moaning, but for now I can't help but think of all the energy I've wasted. Ugggggggggggggggh.

maybe if I look at the letter again... ...nope...

Rejected from Pratt fuck it all

I think I need to know the decisions from Pratt before I can think about making a decision. Too many hypotheticals otherwise. I got an email from Pratt, after I inquired via email: "Decisions are being made as we speak. They will start notifying them next week. "

Tough decision between AC and RISD, but it's a good problem to have. At that point it becomes too personal for anyone to give any constructive advice, assuming you know the gist of the programs. It comes down to what you want to dedicate yourself to. In response to your question, I only applied to three programs. I was accepted at Carleton (in Ottawa, Canada), and I'm waiting on Pratt.

REJECTED from RISD. Called in just now. I should be expecting the official letter soon.

A rejection to RISD ID has been posted on the Results page. This could be a good sign that I have missed the rejection wave, or could just mean that they didn't have enough time on Friday to send all the decision emails. Either way, it's more torturous waiting.

Reconsidering Calgary (Is it really racist there?)

I guess you must know this, being in Ontario, but for everyone else reading this: "conservative" doesn't really seem to mean the same thing in Canada as it does in the States. I am positive that there are many large cities in NA that are much less culturally diverse and accepting than Calgary. Don't let that stat / news story be a deciding factor. -
As the RISD decision notification deadline of March 24 ( http://www.risd.edu/...pply/Graduates/ ) approaches, I'm growing doubtful that I will receive an offer, as I have not been contacted for an interview yet. In late January, I sent the department an email about the possibility of visiting, and maybe working in an interview. They responded by saying that if applications make the final cut, they will call with any questions they might have. The wording leaves room for the case where they wouldn't call if they didn't have any questions... but I can't help but take it as a bad sign. Just saying. Anyone heard of cases of RISD acceptances without interviews?

I figured that this forum might be the only place where I might find people that could appreciate this story: Today I received a package in the mail from my top choice school. It was larger than a letter envelope, different proportions than a manila envelope, and pretty heavy. I was pretty certain that I'd hear by email first, and that it was too early to be receiving a decision from this school, but how could I deny the significance of this package? I dropped my groceries and tore it open, only to find that it's a catalog!! AH! I visited the school in person a few months ago and picked up a catalog. So, if I did request one online in the past, it has been so long that I have forgotten. With all the stories around here about people receiving the news I couldn't help but get caught up in what March mail should contain! Oh well - back to refreshing the Results page every 15 minutes.

Wow, congratulations! I'd say the outlook is pretty good for the rest of the programs you applied to... but since you got into your number one I guess it's all just confidence boosters now. Not that those aren't welcome, haha - good stuff!

Congrats - you must be stoked!

Asking for an extension sounds like a no-brainer now. Thanks for the advice! To kill time, and to torture myself, I've been browsing Peterson's for the following information, which some of you may find interesting: Pratt Institute MID Student Statistics: Average age 29. 247 applicants, 27% accepted, 26 enrolled. RISD MID Student Statistics: Average age 29. 127 applicants, 15% accepted, 8 enrolled. I'm not sure how current these stats are, but comparison of different schools and programs has been mildly entertaining nonetheless. You can find similar stats for other programs at http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools The 15% acceptance at RISD is intimidatingly low, but at least it's higher than the 4% of their MFA Painting...

That makes me nervous that you heard from RISD, but since it's from I different program I shouldn't be jumping to an conclusions... just the nerves I received an acceptance letter from Carleton today, which includes a TA position and a scholarship. I have 21 days to respond, and from what I've seen in the Results history, I can't be confident that I'll hear from either Pratt or RISD by then. I guess I'll have to do some calling - maybe it's an opportunity to use the first acceptance as leverage / proof that I'm a worthwhile candidate. Either that, or I'll be forced to let the offer lapse as I hold out hope.

There doesn't seem to be much activity around The Grad Cafe for Industrial Design candidates, so I thought I'd start a thread. I think I've seen some activity on the Results page, but I can't remember what schools they were for. I've applied to RISD, Pratt, and Carleton, and I have only received official confirmation from Pratt and unofficial confirmation from Carleton (an email in response to my inquiry). I haven't heard anything from RISD so far. I have the sense that decisions should be received by Pratt and RISD by late March / early April, but I've found no information for Carleton. Anyone else waiting, and looking for the right place to check up on other ID applicants?
