Thank you Poj, I hope that you have some good news in next week. I think my decision will not affect their decision about your application because she clearly mentioned they're still waiting to hear from some of their first picks, and evidently, that implies the process has not closed yet! Keeping my fingers crossed for you!
Congrats commtome!!! I have still not heard back from UMASS. I hope I may be fortunate in the next round. Congrats again.

Thanks MHouse. Yes, I decided to accept their offer, it's a fully funded offer from my top choice I've been waiting for nearly four months! Good luck to you too!
Congrats commtome!!!! Have you decided whether to accept or not?

Finally, I got an offer of admission from UMass yesterday morning (April 22). I really hope that those who're still waiting on UMass will get some good news! Actually they said they're still waiting to hear back from the people who were accepted but have not decided yet! It seems they haven't closed the process yet.

I just got it. This is the wording "In the end, we are able to admit only about 12 into our incoming class. As a result of this process, I am sorry to inform you that while your application had merits, it was not among those admitted."
Thanks, jmac! I'm sorry, but you know, you don't really need to feel that bad because of this ridiculous process. After all you've got a great offer from your top choice. BTW was that you who posted the rejection on the results board? I'm curious how many people received the email notification today.
-
The director gave me a kind response in the email that, "All members of the Graduate Admissions Committee remain very much impressed with your application materials."
I asked for an extension of the deadline from one of my top choices.
It's a good sign, I guess. They should accept at least a few applicants from their waitlist. Good luck, Poj!

Hey commtome,
I've withdrawn myself from the waitlist at Umass and sent my acceptance letter to Pitt! Feels good to have that decision out of the way. (My girlfriend is very glad to not have to hear me obsess over the deeper meanings of emails with DGSs and so forth.) How are things going with you?
Congrats, Jcantrone! Great to hear that you finally got off the waitlist! It's your top choice, isn't it? I guess I'll be able to make my final decision in a couple of days, you know, I'm still waiting to hear back from the two of my top choices. But If both of them say no, or their funding offers are not as good as what I've got, I'm also going to Pitt!

Two of my friends were rejected; one was accepted. They all knew by mid-march. The campus visit weekend was Mar 18 I believe. Not sure how their waitlist works, so you may be waitlisted. It is one of your top choices? Perhaps you can ask for an extension on decision making until you've heard back?
Thank you for your information, Jcantrone! I received the email on that day, I guess. Now I know, at least, there are actual people getting in there. Yes, it's one of my top choices and I have nine more days to make my final decision, though I think I'll be told in a couple of days. How are things going Jcantrone, have you decided where to go?

Just like all you guys, I've seen lots of acceptances/rejections and even waitlisters from all the universities that have Comm. programs. But as some of you might notice no one has claimed an acceptance to the ICR (Ph.D.), University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign so far - there were rejections and a waitlister (me) on the results board. One of my friends even didn't get any kind of notification (as of the end of March). Do you guys have any idea how many funded spots they offered? Anyone have a friend who got accepted? Thank you so much for sharing your info!!
-
I was informed from the director that the department will give me a definitive admission response next week.
That's not bad. Thanks for the info. Hope they send out the results ASAP. How was the tone? Did she allude to your status, or just give the "information"?
BTW, Poj, have you requested the extension for your final decision from the other programs you got in, while waiting for the result from UMass?

AND......... in the eleventh hour, yours truly snags the final spot at UGA w/ funding! I am so excited. It's been a long 6 months since submitting apps. I have appreciated all of you on this forum and I am really happy to have been able to go through this experience w/ you all. Correction, I should say y'all since I will be going to Georgia. Note to self....work on southern drawl this summer. It looks like many people have been coming off wait lists, getting funding and making final decisions. May we all get what we desire, best of luck to everyone.
I knew it! What a wonderful news, Congrats tvphd!! Sure, it looks a lot of people are getting off their waitlists, and, it turned out that I joined the club today (w/ funding, 4 years). No doubt that your cheering me up has worked! Okay, two more to go...
-
Yep, sure is! I'm thrilled. :DHow are things shaping up for you?
Oh, I'm sure there will be no changes in my status until THE day, though I occasionally dream about a guy who declines a couple of offers from where he was waitlisted. Anyway, congrats again, jmac!
-
That being said I got in off the waitlist at UW-Seattle and will most likely be accepting. I'm thrilled! Best of luck to you all!
Wow this is great! That is one of your top choices, right? Congrats, jmac!! You've gone through this painful uncertainty, and you deserve it!
-
Finally got an informal acceptance today! About d@mn time after all the "NO"s I've gotten. Now, if I can just get funding...
Congrats, hedjuk!!!

thanks for the info, commtomme! always good to connect with fellow waitlisters. only we can understand each others anguish! out of curiosity, where does Pitt rank in your list of potential schools? (it's pretty near the top for me, since i'm hoping to study rhetoric pretty exclusively.) i also get the sense that it's a fairly elite program if you're into rhetoric. (always hard to compare comm programs against each other though.) good luck to us both!
It's true, I had no idea what it's like until I got waitlisted. Sure there are a couple of faculty members who have similar research interests to mine and I love to work with, but U of Pitt is not one of my top three choices, actually, I'm not into rhetoric exclusively. The problem is I also got waitlisted at two other programs which are my top choices. But you're right, Pitt has a fantastic rhetoric program. Good luck, Jcantrone!

I'm just curious if anyone has gotten any news in the last week or so. It's been very quiet! As for me--nothing but radio silence. I am going to visit a program tomorrow that admitted but hasn't funded me yet! Send good karma!
I got some news, but it's not the kind I wished to have, technically, because the fact that I still have to wait has not changed. You know what I mean, from two to three. Good luck with your funding!
-
bump! i received notification that i am on the waitlist.. any fellow waitlisters (or anyone turning down their admission to the program?) this waiting is killing me!
Hey, Jcantrone, I actually received the same notification at the end of Feb. And I found an acceptance posted a couple of days ago on the results board. I'm thinking that poster got off the list, though I'm not sure about it. But I'm sure this waiting will continue by mid-April.
-
ugh, im still waiting on amherst too. so assuming that means im waitlisted also.
when you guys emailed the coordinator, did she give any mention of how long their waitlist is, or whether it's ranked?
No indication of whether or not it's a ranked list. And I have no clue how many people are currently on their waitlist, but I was told (not by her) the number of acceptances was about 12.
-
Update from UMass. I emailed the graduate admission director and got a response that I'm on their waitlist.
It's surely better than being rejected, but it's also true, this waiting is still stressful. And thank you guys for your suggestions jmacnomad and Poj!
-
I sent an email to Kathleen and it took around 2 days to get a response from the graduate admissions director. Hope you get a response very soon.
Thanks, Poj! Good luck to you too!
-
I haven't heard anything since emailing and getting the response from them on Thursday. There was no indication of when I might hear from them again. It said they "were waiting to hear back from other applicants before making a decision" on mine. you might email them to see what your status is. It doesn't seem like they tell you your waitlisted unless you ask. It sounds like they contacted acceptances and rejections but not waitlisters.
It's really strange. I emailed the department as you suggested, jmacnomad (thanks!), but I've had no response yet. Now I'm thinking like, 'my application materials might not have been forwarded to the department,' which is the worst scenario I can imagine. Did you guys send your emails to Kathleen? It seems this crazy waiting will never end. I haven't heard anything back from my top choices, one of which is UMass.
-
Just checking to see if anyone else has heard from Umass? I've heard nothing and it seems that they've sent out some acceptances and rejections. Anyone else in limbo?
Wow, I wasn't the only one who heard nothing from them. I can't fathom what their process is like, though I take it as a rejection.
-
For those who have heard from UNC Communication Studies... were you sent your decision directly or did you call/e-mail the department?
Yes, I received the email in which my name was clearly stated, surprisingly, in the middle of the night. It was from the graduate school, not the department.
-
It's MA, so I think the department has still not announced the admission for PhD applicants. Good luck with your application.
Thanks a lot, Poj. This waiting is driving me crazy. You proved yourself not "worthless," which adjective I hope not to use for myself. Congratulations again!
-
That's the Journalism and Mass Comm department that is undergoing a bunch of changes, not the Communication Studies Department just for those who were curious. (I applied to the Comm studies dept and was accepted...)
So, It's not the Comm Studies dept. that is "transforming." Anyway, could you tell me when you were notified from the Comm Studies, Jcantrone? And, congrats on your admission!
Has anyone heard back from UMASS?

Thanks tvphd!! Yep, that's the only problem, too "cool." My wife hates cold weather! Congrats on going to 'no more winter' land!
