  1. Berkeley shortlisted 30 candidates towards the end of January. Those shortlisted were contacted by professors whom they listed as probable advisors. So there is a high chance that those who are not contacted are out (that includes me) :(. source: someone who was shortlisted and contacted by Calloway. Also, decisions were supposed to be out within two weeks of them contacting, which was around Feb 15.

  2. Previous Schools (Name, type, or tier): Middle tier engineering school in India, Pursuing MA in econ along-with work

Previous Degrees and GPA's: Engineering (3.7), Econ (3.6)

GRE Scores (Verbal/Quantitative/Analytical Writing): V: 540, Q: 720, A - 4.5 (I know i screwed it up, but i didn't have enough time to prepare due to some very important work commitments)

Previous Work Experience (Years, Type): 14 months as an analyst at a sales and marketing consultancy, 2.5 years as a researcher at a non-profit research based public advocacy group.

Math/Econ Background: Decent Math background thanks to engineering,

    Foreign Language Background: Hindi

Intended Field of Study in Grad School: MPP with a focus on international energy/environmental policy

Long Term Professional Goals: Public sector, work at an international organization like the World Bank in the environment area - applied sustainable development, or work at a think tank such as the World Resource organisation.

    Schools Applied to & Results:

Accepted: Cornell ($), NYU Wagner, UMD ($)

Rejected: WWS, Duke, Penn State Phd program (low GRE scores was the reason cited by Penn State)

    Waitlisted: Yale.

Ultimate Decision & Why: UMD. My first choice certainly was WWS. However, I am really happy UMD. Firstly, I have got a great funding offer that would really make my life easier. Secondly, UMD has many research groups working on issues related to global climate change and energy. In fact I also corresponded with the faculty and found them to be warm. I know for a fact that they are very talented and have been doing good research in the fields I am interested in. And since I have a GA, I can make the most of it by working with such research groups and faculty. And to add to the pros, it is close to DC and some of their environmental courses are conducted at the EPA. Thus offering enough exposure and taking care of the networking bit.

Any advice to Future Applicants? START EARLY, as early as possible. Look at all possible schools, go through the faculty interests, correspond with them if required, make an excel sheet putting in the pros and the cons of each program, weigh them well and decide on the top 6-8 programs. No point applying to 12 different programs. Wastes time, energy and MONEY! And finally make an excel sheet with information about deadlines, requirements(GRE, SOP, Recos) etc and keep a tab on it. I almost missed my NYU deadline! :\ All the best!

  3. Since most of us have our admits by now and have made our decisions, it would be great to know where everyone is headed. This would also help MPP/MPA candidates to get in touch with their future classmates.

It would be great if we could maintain this simple format

    GRE: Q/V/A

    GPA:

    Work Exp (in years):

Final decision (with funding details if any):

    As for me it is:

    GRE: 720/540/4.5

    GPA: 3.7

    Work Exp (in years): 3.5

Final decision (with funding details if any): University of Maryland(MPP) - got a half grad assistantship

  4. Did your friend separately apply for the RFFG?

For the Half Assistantship, Maryland gives forgives the cost of five credits of tuition per semester, charges the remainder at in-state rates, gives you a stipend of around $6000 a year. If I remember correctly, this takes care of all tuition and fees except for about $2k a semester. Then its up to you to pay for living costs. So I believe you would save significantly over JHU, even with your funding.

My friend was chosen as an RFFG fellow. I think he has to decide this week if he accepts or declines, in which case an alternate will be chosen. He'll probably accept though (how do you turn down full tuition with $35k of stipend money over 2 years!?)

  5. Yep checked the account but nothing yet!

I think they did acceptances first by an email notification letting you know a decision was made and you could then access the decision on your UMD application within 24-48 hours. I received a copy of that letter within a week in the mail, and then the funding decision and full departmental information came about a week after that. It was a process with a lot of steps. Have you checked your account?

  6. I just checked the website and it still says Pending Decision. I hope what you say is true though! :-)

If you got an invite from Dr. Faulkner, that means you've been accepted to the program. Happened to me too! I checked my mailbox after i got that email-- and found my acceptance package! So your's should be in the mail too-- the letter was dated march 10th and posted the very next day!

  7. I was surprised to find an email inviting me for an admitted students' open house. The irony is I haven't received an acceptance yet and they want me to RSVP by 18th March. I have written to Taryn, and may call her tonight. Anyone else out here with similar experience?

Also have the acceptances been sent out via email or snail mail. I am an International student and hence snail mail may take its own sweet time!

  8. Called the office today. The lady on the phone told me that all "decisions" haven't been sent out and will be sent out if not by the end of this week, hopefully by early next week. When I asked her if all the "Admits" have been sent out and whether the Waitlists and Rejects remain, she said she was not aware.

    I am losing hope! :-)

  9. Assuming that for every 5 admits 1 will post on the forum, we still have a chance. One observation is that no one has posted a Reject. But last year's GC result search has shown both accepts and rejects on 11th March, which was the very first day any decision regarding MPA was out. So may be the AdCom is taking its sweet time to send out decisions! :)

And yes, here is to the hope and that silver line! :D

It's hard to know - I see a lot of traffic on these boards for WWS applicants, and at present, if you refer to the results search page, I only see 5 admits: (smerd, cramille, abogs78, abogs78's friend, & politico). Even if the 5 ppl on the results board are different than the 5 who've posted in this forum, that only accounts for 10 of the total admits. Last yr, there were 85 admits. Clearly, I can't rely on this blog as an adequate portrait or comprehensive sample of all admits.

But here is to hoping that there remains a chance.....

I'm 8 hours ahead of princeton time - meaning I have at most 2 more nights of anxious waiting! good luck to all!

  10. Those are some good scores!

Congrats once again! My application was forwarded to the AdCom on 15th feb 2011. So I guess I should wait for a while before i jump to any conclusions! :)

Thx. I posted my profile in the "MPP/MPA 2011 Applicants", you can have a check if you want.

Well my GPA is 3.76/4.0, Major 3.9/4.0, GRE 610+780+3.5, TOEFL 107. No professional working experience, but interned in 3 NGOs and did a volunteer project in India.

And I finished my application before Nov.

  11. Congrats on your admit. When did you submit your application? Also at your wish can you share your profile. GPA, GRE/TOEFL, relevant work-ex?

    Congrats once again!

I got the offer from CIPA this morning, saying that i'm admitted, and was granted $23,000 per year.

By the way, I'm also an international student, about to graduate from undergraduate school by June 2011. And good luck to everyone~
