  1. I almost applied to Berkeley Rhetoric, but at the last minute decided to do history instead. It seems like a great program/field ("field"), and I think a small part of me will always wonder if I would have gotten in, and what I would have done. I think that these days, a person in almost any humanities/social science (or even science, if so inclined!) could incorporate the same methods and approaches into any project, and most do. It's still relevant and evolving, for sure, but I think the general ideas behind it have bled profusely into other disciplines.

There's a very high chance I'll be going to Berkeley next year-- It's a long time from now but I'm getting excited and curious already about actually living there. Where in town (or just out of town, as the case may be) would a person live on a humanities fellowship? I can be kind of a misanthrope, so have had bad experiences with co-ops and large shared houses. Or rather, co-ops have had bad experience with me. The ideal would be a studio apartment or having just one or two other roommates. I don't drive, either. I have a friend in Oakland who works at UC Press, and we're talking about becoming roommates when his lease is up. He's attached to Oakland--would a short commute from Oakland be doable as a full time student? PS I don't have a problem living in seedy neighborhoods or anything
  3. It was from Barbara. Speaking of which, having communications conducted by a human and not a robot like every other school has already earned Berkeley a thousand points of respect and admiration. I only applied to major "reach" schools, and was barely in contact with any professors at any of them, so really this was a shock--as would be any future acceptances. Good luck!
  4. Already posted in the History forum, but I just got accepted to UC Berkeley. The email came to me at 10:30pm New York time, so like 7:30pm in Cali--the unorthodox West has already won my heart!
  5. I just heard from Berkeley. Accepted with funding. By email, at 10:30pm (NYC time--so 7:30 in CA). Totally unexpected.
