I applied in January, got an email yesterday -- "The second NSF Cultural Anthropology Doctoral Dissertation Advisory Panel met at NSF on March 25 & 26, 2013. Your proposal was among those reviewed by that panel. They rated your proposal Not Competitive, so I am sorry to say that we will not be recommending that it be funded."

Hey, I also found this company http://www.parcelmonkey.co.uk/ for shipping: it seems they are buying space from big shipping companies like DHL but have much cheaper prices (not sure how that works but I think I'll go with them).

I know, it is frustrating. Unfortunately, UK and US admission cycles do not work on the same time scale... But as more and more UK students are likely to apply to US universities after the changes in Higher Education funding, it might be in the UK's interest to catch up with the earlier US decision dates (i know a couple of people who ended up accepting the US offers simply because it would have been too risky to decline them without firm admissions and funding (!) offers from UK unis)... Anyway, good luck!

Hi, I'll start my PhD at UMass this fall and I am currently trying to decide where to live. I am currently leaning towards Northampton as it seems more interesting a place than Amherst. I don't have a car, so I was wondering if you think that the public transport is reliable (even in winter when it's snowy)? Also, do you know at all when people generally start advertising rooms for August/September? I guess it is still early as I currently only find rooms for May or June. Thanks!

Hi, I posted my UPenn rejection in the results section. I was told that they only accepted two applicants for cultural anthropology and that they haven't sent out notifications yet. That's all I know. Hope that helps!
