  1. am currently a grad student at columbia - teacher college, I think you will do better to focus on making the most out of your life at Harvard, its really a good place and sometimes you cannot be in two places at the same time and in a way there is always some regret of what you do, if you were at columbia you would be thinking harvard is better! one thing I really feel about this place is that its very expensive! I was shocked how expensive it is and as a student once in a while you have to eat out as you may not have time to cook! Overall I love columbia and new york is so so good, the fact that we not in NYU area is even very important for me as it enables me to kind of step out of NYC and then going there when I want! Enjoy your stay were you are!
  2. You are right Kathiza, infact they say until you get your visa or something like that. there seems to be many stages until you get it actually for example in my country the medical examination seems important as well.
  3. IN MY COUNTRY IT WORKS LIKE THIS; I APPLY TO FULBRIGHT COUNTRY OFFICE AND IN MY APPLICATION I INCLUDE SOME SUGGESTIONS ON THE SCHOOLS I WANT TO APPLY TO BUT THEY PICK THERE OWN SCHOOLS ANYWAY. For example I had indicated four schools of which they only applied to one. they IIE does the application and they decide which schools they want you to go to.
  4. People, just thought of starting this topic on Fulbright J1 interview. Mine is on 22nd June 2011

  9. Morning everyone, I have been away for sometime. How is it going for the others that haven't gotten news yet? I hope things turn out good. However, i wanted to find out if anyone has any idea on the accommodation situation, am thinking of getting on campus housing but in a shared apartment as I think if I get a good roommate it will be easier for me to acclimatize to NY.THe question is how expensive is shared apartment compared to single in whitter hall (for those who have been at teachers college, columbia university). I do not know my fulbright specs yet. some idea please

  15. I just got a call from our local Fulbright office saying I have been given a scholarship a full funding she then sent me an email from IIE which basically says the details will follow later. Details to follow later! But I need to get to the school to work out the housing situation any ideas it Columbia University - Teachers College? All the best to all who are still waiting, the call for me came so unexpected!
  16. am in heading to New York in August!

  17. Hello everyone, Its about checking your mail every two minute and the time difference has not helped anyone. The US is at least 7hours behind so I have to wait until 11pm local time to have any possibility of anything. I agree with most people that all universities in the states would offer a dream for a person coming from a country like Zambia. To start with we do not even have programmes I want to pursue there. So it does not really matter what school I end up in so long as the IIE see it as a good possibility. Am also happy in a way that when they offer the scholarship in our country its a complete package there is little that can change. It is not that I still have to decide which schools I go to it is just a question of whether I want the programme or not. I want to believe that whatever school I can work hard and adapt to it than worrying about the ranks etc. Today is the last day, I understand for one of the schools to inform IIE on one of the candidates here. It seems in Zambia the Fulbright is decided as a whole in terms of all the finalist not just as they become approved. So when we know we know at the same time whether we are in or out. All the best everyone!
  18. It good to see this forum getting busy. I have learnt a lot in the last dazs of this Fulbright. Congrats to Annette! Now concerning quality of schools I think the program should be the focus. My program Arts Administration has mostly gret programs with similaritis. So for me the IIE will help me get to schools where I wil best fit considering my credentials. In my country Zambia we are 4 and the get 2 or 3 and I think no one has heard anythin. I dnt knw how much the stipend is niether.
  19. hello, I now know I may hear from the fulbright guys next week! one of my fellow finalist said her school will get back to them this week friday!

  20. It depends in which country you are, in Zambia where I am we just apply to the fulbright and they make all the application. It would be possible to make my own application but it may complicate the process as the Fulbright application process has its own calendar that is very long sometimes and may put you in a situation where you have to respond to the University before the fulbright give you an answer. But I thnk the f question should be; Which country are you from? Put your country here then you may get help easily. All the best!
  21. Thanks everyone who has made place warm witg waiting. I cn imagine Fulbright process email/internet on phones! LoL, anyways am very happy with both my IIE and Local fulbright officer. They have done a gret job so far at first b4 I checked out the schools esp. the programs I was nt very keen bt nw am happy. Ofcourse the waitin is killing me, I think patience is the best option. I hav direct link with 2 of the 4 schools bt wont use it until I knw. The only question is r the fulbright told at the same time or as decions are made by IIE? Am frm Zambia and all the best to all.
  22. I just an interview with Columbia on 22.02.11! it was a phone interview, lasted only about 16minutes! (that is worrying) it was okay, The prof. just expected me to ask the questions, I was taken abock about that so. just prepare some questions. Of course I know each interview is different. the there was a part on why me other than the other candidates. have I been to NY (Am from Zambia and never been to NY) In terms of how many people are interviewed, well for MA Arts Administration there are a couple of other students appliying, but they do not call everyone. All the best for 1st march!
  23. the fulbright works the same here in Zambia, I wish we could know if fulbright have us already as we make the application! But anyway though I didn't choose the schools I was very happy with the IIE choices and one of them was on my list! so its all good there but the waiting. I have done two interviews (phone ofcourse) but University at Buffalo is quite and am hoping to know when they start announcing.
  24. equally here, I have to keep it under wraps but I have told one or two people, at least there is three months notification before leaving which is okay. but then I have to decide whether to renew my contract in a few weeks time!
