  1. just saw the campus last week when I was up for Spring Break.

i must say it was fantastic, city life, and everyone there seemed super-nice. the campus tour was pretty thrilling.

i really look forward to attending this upcoming fall!

  2. Greetings fellow grad students!

So... I am an American who is going to Toronto in the fall with the guaranteed minimum funding for Arts/Sci PhD students: $15,000 plus tuition and fees. Do you think that graduate students can really live on this in the expensive city of Toronto? Or will I be starving at the end of the month? I plan to get a bachelor apartment in the Annex if possible.

I am so excited about going. I hope to be there this summer to learn my way around and to check out some of the cool festivals-- if I can find some money.

sup bro glad to see another American joining me up here, whereabouts r u from? im still looking for a roomie we could split a double lol

  3. Car is a necessity in U.S.no matter where you are, I absolutely agree with you . I am going to buy a second hand one in first semester.

I have thought you are from Stony Brook since your profile shows Stony Brook BME department. But how do you know Prof. Liu by the way?

Professor Liu is currently teaching our Senior Design class for undergraduate seniors. He is a great guy, really friendly, and I like how he operates: he sets small goals that are feasible and helps you get there, without expecting huge big jumps. Also he is one of the few in the USA who helped secure a 6million grant for his group back in Stanford. I am sure he would be an excellent PI to work with!

*As for everyone else: The surroundings aren't the best, but keep in mind NYC is roughly 55 mins away by car, or 1.5hours by train, so I guess it makes up for it.

  4. i am a domestic

ya id suggest traveling to nyc downtown since its much more lively

stony brook itself is a dead city...without a car its gonna really get depressing in my opinion. id recommend buying a car with ur stipend if u can

dont know much else abt stony since i am from buffalo

    hope that helped

    liu is a great professor

  5. How do you think BME program in Stony Brook? I am afraid I only have the offer from them.

BME department is great. Ranked in top 20 in the United States. Faculty is doing some really interesting stuff. Professor Liu is from Stanford and his research in optics is really cool. I would recommend it, but personally I can't stand the depressing environment and that is why I am headed to Toronto for my graduate studies in BME.

    all the best dude.

  6. i dont think the 50k is worth it for a MEng with no thesis. Its better to find a school that is funding you in my opinion (and go for master's with thesis or Ph.D.), even if Cornell is an Ivy.

I hate Cornell because it seems they are just rejecting everyone applying for Master's and Ph.D. and trying to get the rejects to do MEng so they can profit out of them, with no supported funding.

Screw Cornell, and find another school.

  7. im gonna agree with everything the post above says,,,been here since last 4 years for undergraduate...

city is dead, not much to do around, campus pretty meh

definitely not going here for grad school

  8. could anyone provide me info about bringing a usa registered car to toronto?

i live in buffalo so id be commuting back home on the weekends. would it be necessary to get ontario plates?

  9. Got into Toronto's MHSc program in Clinical Engineering. Haha they told me 1500 guaranteed department funding + paid internships....I hardly think that will cover my tuition fees. What is close by to 164 College Street Toronto, Ontario in terms of living options?
