  1. dissertation announcements started going out..no go on mine. Oh well :)

I'm so sorry to hear this mmagpie4. I've been rejected by Ford before so I know it sucks.

I applied for the predoctoral and haven't heard anything yet. I'm going to attempt to enjoy the day and see what awaits me in my inbox tonight

  2. Does anyone's supplemental materials pages say "the deadline to submit supplemental materials was January 30, 2012?" I thought the deadline was January 6. I ask because one of my letter writers had a major difficulty in submitting a letter of rec (apparently the website kept going down). Just hoping my app was reviewed :/

Mine says that as well. This was their first year using this system, so I'm guessing they decided to allow ample time for submissions just in case some glitch occur. If they didn't review your app you would have received a notification letting you know that you did not meet the qualifications. So don't worry I'm sure you app was reviewed ... Cheers and good luck :)

I'm guessing we should all begin to hear back on friday just like the previous years. My nerves are setting in

  3. After applying to the NYU American Studies program and being rejected. Today I get an e-mail asking me to apply to the Draper MA program. Anyone else? Heard its one of NYU's cashcow programs.

Anyways, first I was insulted but then I just had to laugh. I have 2 PhD offers thank you very much!

I also applied to the NYU American Studies PHD and received the same email. I had the same reaction. So insulting because I already have an MA and then just laughable! O NYU!

  4. I'm so on edge right now about the Ford Fellowship. I applied for the pre-doctoral and this my second time applying. Last year I received Honorable Mention which is something BUT without the money it isn't much!

I'm presenting at a conference this week. I am hoping not to find out the bad news before I present or else it will kill my confidence completely! :(

  5. I learned that, this year, they will award dissertation fellowships to 35 applicants out of 500 to 600 people applied. I don't have anything more specific than that. Essentially, the odds are still rather rough.

Yes the Ford continues to becoming increasingly harder to get! I applied for the predoctoral and the chances are much slimmer. I believe they receive 1000+ applications for the predoc.

  6. Hey!

I'm also heading to Northwestern in the Fall. I'm planning to live in the Lincoln Park or Lakeview areas with my spouse. It will make our commutes somewhat equal. We're also used to city life and aren't interested in the suburban experience of Evanston just yet.

  7. Abolitionista, does your last name start with K or L? Because mine does, and my email was not BCC'd either.

Well, congrats to the apparently-absent-from-gradcafe admits.

But ALSO, congrats to the one waitlistee. We're all pullin' for ya!

And finally, big ups to the fellow reject who wrote "Fuck it, dude, let's go bowling." Favorite movie of all time, and the sentiment is extremely apropos.

    Hi blackshirt,

My last name starts with a D. There were only about 10 or so people on the email.

  8. Just got the rejection e-mail. 164 applicants; 2 fellowships. It wasn't entirely unexpected -- because of the deadline, it was the first application I wrote and as I worked on others I realized it was not anywhere near as good a fit as I thought when I applied. Congrats to the two who made it -- though there doesn't seem to be a history of their using GradCafe...

Ditto... The sender forgot to BCC the folks included in the email that I received. O well mistakes happen!

  9. Honestly, it could be legit. Sometimes, profs will email people early on basically saying they're accepted for all intents and purposes, but it's not official.

I agree. I have a lot of friends in that department (USC ASE) and from what I hear the decisions sometimes do go out at "unexpected" times.
