So to keep this short and simple, I asked the CTO at my work to write me a letter of recommendation. He said no problem and I then proceeded to send him the requests with ample enough time to turn them in. He also wrote me a letter of recommendation last year. Deadlines past still no result. Multiple emails and in person conversations yielded no result. I have tried to bring it up to him several times and have gotten, "I'm busy I might be able to talk tomorrow." I have dealt with that for three weeks. I need some advice fast if anyone has got any.

I was in a similar situation last year with UC Davis. Basically I got hired for a job and didn't want to go back to school. I told them pretty close to the start date in September. Basically I emailed the graduate coordinator for the department and told her that I wanted to defer grad school for a year so that I could work. All it took was an email and she took care of the rest. I would imagine that the process would be pretty similar if you were to decline your acceptance somewhere. Just email them and say that you would like to decline admission. Most cases they don't care because they can just save money on you and give it to other students which is what UC Davis told me last year. Hope that helps.

If you haven't heard for this long it usually means you're on an informal waiting list. This year's application process to Berkeley's mechanical dept. is a little weird. Last year they told people a final decision would be made by april 10th. As a result on April 8th or 9th last year mass rejects went out. I didn't see any rejections before that date. This year is an exception. When I emailed the school they said they would make final decisions towards the end of April and its very odd that rejections have gone out when there are still people waiting for decisions. Usually Berkeley likes to send all the rejections at the very end on one day according to the past several years based on the results search. I am hoping that this is a good sign for both of us DrDogg and that Berkeley is trying to gather dept aid for folks like us. I am hoping for the best! Good luck to you sir!

23... Who the hell knew life would be harder after undergrad than actually in it?

Interesting story for you anxious... I was an undergrad last year at Davis. I applied to seven schools and got rejected from five. My SO was looking for a job at the time and we were struggling to want to be close together to make the relationship work. Eventually I took a job in my hometown as an engineer, which was the best choice instead of grad school. I got way more experience and guidance for when I reapplied this year not to mention career growth when college kids these days aren't getting jobs. She got a job in a city 20 mins away from my hometown. I was living back home with my folks... she was in an apt. We weren't together all the time like back in school. Some stuff happened and we broke up pretty badly right after I finished applying to grad school a 2nd time. So I lost my SO and looks like I still haven't heard from my last school... so I know where you might be going. It sucks but the way I look at it sometimes people just need to get there own life on track and sometimes dragging someone else along for the ride can be pretty tough. Once my life is set on track again maybe I can reconnect with her, but for now I got to worry about myself and my future.

I emailed them as well and got the same message as you. I also applied last year to Berkeley and had to email them as well. This was last years message they sent me about admission decisions: (For Fall 2010) Dear Applicant: Our final admission decision will be made by April 10. You will receive an email regarding your application status. Regards, Graduate Students Office Department of Mechanical Engineering University of California, Berkeley It seems there are so many this year they have to push back acceptances to the end of April which makes no sense when you have to decide by April 15th. Last year everyone got rejected on the 9th of April. Anyway good luck to you!

So I keep getting outside pressure from my work to make a decision about grad school or my job. Is it okay for me to email the POI that I have met and have referenced on my application or should I just keep waiting it out? If I email her how the hell would I start? Dear Prof X, Where am I in the application process blah blah blah would like to express my continued interest in your lab and the department blah blah blah?

Who else has still heard nothing from a school?
NiTi_Wizard replied to mj53's topic in Waiting it Out
I am waiting for one school now. Got my rejection from Stanford today oh well. Still waiting on Berkeley Mechanical Engineering. I believe it will be a rejection considering how long it has been. Anyone heard anything from Berkeley for Mechanical? -
Why do rejections take so much longer than acceptances
NiTi_Wizard replied to NiTi_Wizard's topic in Waiting it Out
Somehow you read my mind smuglife... I applied to the mech department at Berkeley this year and last year. Last year's rejection was expected. I lacked focus, credentials, basically the whole application package was bad. This year however I thought I did things right. I worked for a year in industry. Used my industry connections to talk to a professor at Berkeley, put that name on the application, and got two people from my work to write me letters of rec. Working for a year narrowed my focus tremendously and what I want to get out/ study in grad school. Its frustrating because I'm only a contractor and the longer a school doesn't get back to me the higher chance I can't become a permanent employee at my job because they might hire someone else. At this point I really just want a decision good or bad so I can stop living in a constant state of anxiety. -
The wait is really killing me because the longer I wait the higher chance my work won't hire me full time. Double screwed!

So it seems the two schools I am waiting on have sent out acceptances already. At this point I think I am waiting for the rejection notices. I applied to grad school last year and found out on April 8th I got rejected from a school. Why do these darn schools take so much longer to tell you no versus telling you yes!
