Hi there,
I was recently accepted to the UCLA Applied Linguistics program for the Fall of 2011 as well. I heard that the departmental funding discussion was being postponed until Thursday of this week (March 10th), but have been under the impression from the beginning that MAs don't get funded, so I'm not expecting anything, personally.
I just wanted to touch base with anyone/everyone who's thinking of going because I'm pretty sure I'm going. Also curious to know if anyone out there feels like they have cold feet about signing their SIR despite months of apprehensive hoping that they'd be accepted.
Oh, and to answer your question, whaleshark: the MA program at UCLA is specifically geared toward theory and research. In my dialogue with professors and a PhD candidate, I was SPECIFICALLY advised not to discuss pedagogy (as in interest in teaching) and rather to discuss research ideas and desire to perform research, not teach. I am very invested in my research ideas, so it worked well in helping me flesh those ideas out. Also, I was forwarded an e-mail a few months ago (right before the application deadline, actually) that talked about how the department was getting rid of the TESOL section. (It's an open letter, I believe, and thus can forward it to anyone interested.)
Would be nice to get in touch with others thinking they'll be there in the Fall.
Chris
