  1. :? unfortunately, it looks like i might turn down all 4 of my accepted schools (and one MA...) ...they're all in the 25-40 ranked range.

i'm scared that they're not the best fit for me. i don't want to be there for 5-6-7 years and not have a job when i leave. i feel a bit crazy about this since the application process was so rigorous.

    anyone else doing this?

  2. I'm on two waitlists.

I called them- I left one a voicemail, and the other just called me back- I would definitely call rather than send emails though. The lady I talked to was very nice and gave me all the info I needed to know (ranks, how large the waitlist is, what I can do to help strengthen my application etc.)

    No word on funding.

    Hope that helps!

oh if you don't mind, which programs? i think i'll do that this week if i don't hear from anywhere.

  3. I'm on 3 waitlists.

I'd go to 2 of them in a heartbeat. Do people usually take wait lists as insults and turn down acceptances if they come through? That seems a bit silly.

I really don't know what to do about the wait list situation. I emailed 2 programs after I received my wait list notification but haven't been in touch since then.

I guess my decision will be made on April 15th.

  4. uff, finally heard from my last two! got into LSU with funding, got rejected by Ohio State. I didn't realize until now exactly how much stress I've been carrying around. I feel like my whole body has just relaxed completely.

good luck to everyone who's still waiting. now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go get drunk.

that's how i felt at the beginning of this process, when i was done with the GREs. now, i can't wait until april 15th.

  5. I just called LSU, cause it had been three weeks since they said they'd have decisions in two. I think if you haven't heard anything in two or three weeks, you're justified in contacting the department.

Unfortunately, they did not give us a time frame. They told us we can check our application status back in January but nothing has changed since I submitted my application.

  6. anyone else really anxious about the waiting list process?

also, is anyone on a waiting list for funding? it probably depends on each school, but if i attended a school without funding for my first year, would i be able to receive funding for subsequent years?

  7. well, the last of my rejections has rolled in.

i think i'm going to accept pittsburgh's offer today or tomorrow. i don't know how many people applied to CMU or miami, but hopefully me turning them down will help out someone else. :)

ah congrats on making a final decision!

when was your CMU admit-weekend invite? i still have not heard from them...

  8. Well, I finally got my rejection email from Columbia. It's actually a bit of relief to have one less question mark. Still two left though. Toronto told me I should be getting a letter in the mail soon, but does anyone have any updated information on Cornell? I emailed the department a few days ago, but haven't gotten a response. Rumor here had it that they have already contacted all of their accepted students, so I suppose they could just be slow with the rejection letters, although a lot of people posted rejection letters a week or so ago.

Anyone else having a hard time deciding between their current offers? I've gotten into two good, somewhat similar programs, and am not sure what to do. I'm visiting both in the next few weeks, and hopefully that will help me decide!

    as a rutgers alum - i vote RU. :D

im also having a really hard time making a decision. is anyone else moving/making their decision with a significant other?

  9. Late congrats, misterpat!!! It's awesome that you have a choice that you're happy with, and is tough for all the right reasons.

I'm completely with you on the Chicago thing, btw. I'd like to close that chapter too.

Me three. Maybe it'll be there when I come home from work today...

  10. University of Chicago is the last school I have yet to hear back from. Does anyone know whether decisions have been made/when they'll be notifying?

looks like their "history day" was yesterday for students with offers. i also didn't hear from them yet but i assume the worst. :(

  11. nice! congratulations to you too!

it said the MA program, but it also said that i was getting 5 years of funding and the doctoral dissertation fellowship, so i assumed that meant i was in for the PhD program. i think the way pitt works is they admit you to the MA program and as you're finishing your courses, they admit you to the PhD.

now i'll have to double check... but i imagine it's the MA/PhD if they've laid out a 5 year funding package.

whew okay - i was confused and got kind of nervous that i only applied to the ma program. let me know what they tell you :)

  12. i got into pitt! the director of grad studies emailed me. a first year arts & sciences fellowship with no teaching requirements, a fourth year social science doctoral dissertation fellowship with no teaching requirements, and three years of a teaching fellowship (2nd, 3rd, and 5th years).

i am really excited. pitt was one of my top choices and definitely the best "fit" out of any school that i applied to. i'mma go do a happy dance now. :D

Congrats! Me too! Did your email say that they admitted you to the MA program or the MA/PhD program?

  13. I still haven't heard from Indiana or UC Davis, both of which started notifying people weeks ago. I'm choosing to be positive and interpret this to mean that I'm on a waitlist. (I at least know that I haven't been rejected yet by UCD.) If someone has info to burst my bubble, though, please do share--at least I'm in somewhere now, and should be better prepared to handle another rejection or three.

    :)

i also didn't hear from indiana yet. the people that heard from them, heard weeks ago too. the waiting game continues...

  14. i got into carnegie mellon this morning. if nothing else, it will be exciting to work with john soluri and paul eiss. also nice to have options now.

Ah congrats! I'm waiting to hear from them. How did they notify you?

  15. to current and past applicants - -

i'm not sure if anyone has experience with this, but i figured it was worth a shot.

i was notified (today while on vacation) that i am on the waitlist for a top school that i would like to attend this fall. the language in the email says that i'm on a "short wait list of strong applicants." i was accepted to one other program so far but i would prefer this waitlisted program - it's really a great fit, great location, etc.

should i immediately respond to their email? what's the proper procedure/etiquette in this situation? i'd appreciate any feedback - thanks!
