  1. I was notified that I was on a wait list on April 1. I had hoped that I would hear something today (April 18th). I finally broke down and called the program to at least find out my ranking on the wait-list. It turns out that the graduate admissions coordinator is on vacation until April 22nd - bummer. I guess I still wait.

  2. I was notified that I was added to a "short wait-list" at the University of Washington. The letter was fairly up-beat and seemed to imply that they have every intention of clearing their wait-list. The letter also stated that I might not hear from them until May or early June.

Anyone have experience with this type of verbiage? Should I even get remotely hopeful?

  3. I am 40 and was rejected from the University of British Columbia and have had absolutely no response from the University of Washington - although I am not hopeful considering that acceptances have been posted on the survey page since the 17th. I was applying to the 3-year MARCH program after a 20-year career in IT-related industries.

The only age-related advice that I received during the application process was some "Off the record" advice from UBC. The person basically said to position your statement of interest as a logical extension of the work that you are currently doing (application design to building design in my case). In no way indicate that this is a mid-life crisis or that you are looking for a career change. The admissions people do not look favorably upon that.

  4. I applied to the MArch programs at the University of Washington in Seattle and the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. There have been some acceptances, rejections and wait list posted, but I sit here in silence. Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Any insight would be helpful.

I am also doing a career change. Architecture was my first major in college in 1988 at the University of Arizona. It turned out that the school and I were a terrible fit for each other. I finally graduated with a Biochemistry Degree that I never used and I have spent the last 20 years in the IT industry earning an MBA along the way. Things slowed down in IT-land significantly last year and I had time on my hands. I decided to take an "Architecture Boot Camp" class (Arch 100) at UW, which I loved. I followed that up with a CAD class and an Architectural Photography class in the fall. Still undeterred, I brushed off my 40-year-old neurons and did quite well on the GRE, put together a portfolio, and applied to the schools.

It is quite obvious by now that I was not their first choice as acceptances were sent out two weeks ago, but I was apparently not their last choice either. So, I sit somewhere in the middle waiting in academic limbo.

  5. I applied to two schools. According to this site, they started sending out acceptances the week of the 14th. I did not get an acceptance letter, so I assume that I was not their first choice. They began sending out rejection letters and "wait list" announcements at the end of last week. I have received neither. I have no idea what this means. Any insight would be appreciated.

There was a recent news story that the University of Washington (my first choice) has a bias against in-state applicants. It is difficult budget times and they just don't get enough money from the in-state people, so they are accepting a disproportionately large number of out of state applications. (News story stated that some 3.8 GPA / 1580 SAT undergrad applicants were being turned away). I also saw that the University of Washington was having a reception this weekend for "Students of Color". Alas, I am a white man :-( On the "bright" side, I am over 40; maybe they need to increase that demographic.

The second school - University of British Columbia - stated overtly "don't contact us, we will contact you" when they confirmed that they had received all the supporting documentation for my application. No updates have been posted on UBC's application portal. It just states "Application Complete".

Any thoughts regarding what, if anything, I should be reading into the deafening sound of silence?
