I got word that current Fulbrighters in Syria have been evacuated and moved to Jordan. So I guess some prospective MENA applicants should be prepared to choose an alternate country or defer
I did some more digging and found what the appropriation for ECA (the Bureau overseeing Fulbright) is from here
For reference this is what the request was
So it is a cut of something like 5% for the entire bureau. But I don't think it's certain right now how much of that cut will affect the Fulbright Program, so I guess that's being hashed out right now? I have no idea.
Are you sure about this? I didn't think TItle VI affects us. From what I know, Fulbright grants come through the ECA section of the State Department which is a different funding stream than Fulbright-Hays and Title VI (through the Department of Education). I know that the budget request for Fulbright was pretty much the same as it was last year (thanks Obama) but I don't know what actually passed Congress. Neither the White House or DoS pages have any details about how the funding is being passed along.
I similarly got an email from Jermaine about Syria saying that he is "not sure" of when notifications will go out, and "hopefully soon". He told me that the holdup in notifications doesn't have to do with the political climate in Syria, but rather it is caused by the budget situation in DC right now. Which I don't really understand...why do certain countries already have notifications sent out independent of the budget situation?
Yeah the CLS isn't an issue at all, my program director has been very helpful throughout the process. But if I do get the Fulbright I do have to arrange other summer plans and I would like to know sooner than later. I'm totally looking forward to either. Especially since if I do the CLS I get a summer vacation on a Mediterranean beach.

I doubt there's anything to worry about. Unless you need to renew your passport, in which case you are probably screwed.
Does anyone know what happens to an application if sudden security unrest appears in a country during the process? Does the Fulbright Committee give you a grant dependent on the security situation bettering?
