  1. I was informed by a professor that I'd be receiving a TA job. I am yet to receive any exact figures. I need some help with my financial planning.

The fees they have listed are $ 26,000 tuitions and fees

    $ 14,000 other expenses

    Is the following true:

    1. TA's get tuition waiver so $26000 is taken care of?

    2. TA's get a stipend of atleast $1000?

    3. TA's get health coverage ?

    4. TA's get housing?

Thank you :) .. If all of the above are true , I am one rich Kid :D :D :D

  2. Scr** her man! You dont need her to tell you what you are and are not! If you are letting her put you down then you probably deserve to be put down! Break the M-F'in shackles and do your thing. Dont fight back .. Just be on your toes .. Don't give her a chance to mess with you. Things will get better. Let us know what happens.. Best of Luck.

  3. I've taken a year off and here are some of my observations:

    1. Back when i was doing my engineering, i thought 'Man this is tough. I so want to start working now.' But believe you me, engineering was nothing compared to what you have to do at work.

    2. Now That I go back to school, i'm actually relieved coz it will actually be 'Time off' , its bound to be easier than working full time. Plus when I get back to working, I will be respected even more for being a Graduate.

    3. The 1 year off gave me a whole new perspective. As a student in undergrad, i was so involved in my own little world (girls, parties, gym) that I did not care to look at the so called ' real world '. Well now i can say, ' been there, done that'.

    4. The 1 year i worked, i managed to save some money. It will help me with needing only small student loans.

All in all, I am very glad i took 1 year off. You mature 10X faster than what you would have done had you spent that year in school ! Ciao :)

  4. Why are they so bad in providing information? sad.gif

It took me forever to find out I'm waitlisted, and even now I have no idea if it's ranked, or - more importantly - when will they decide.

Why can't they give a time frame? angry.gif

For all we know, the Wait-List could just be a bowl containing names of applicants. Its like a lottery. Un-ranked, un-biased pure LUCK.

Like 'Two-face' from batman always says,"The world is cruel. And the only morality in a cruel world is Chance. Unbiased...unprejudiced...fair."

I have been wait-listed at my #1 priority school. They have asked me to call them tonight .. Don't expect a decision today though ... I'm sure they are gonna ask me to call again next week. Its almost mundane now.

  5. im very bitter with one university. I've sent them some emails and I get an auto-reply saying that the program assistant is away. at this point it almost seems like a fake auto-reply (cause seriously when does an autoreply take a day to come back?) are they just avoiding us? why on earth would they not just say "we will notify you in x days/weeks OR no you are not accepted" sheesh. if it is cause they are waiting to gather funding or we’re on some kinda unofficial waitlist just indicate something along those lines.

These people are heartless asses who do not care about the emotions of people they are playing with!

on the plus side, a program I didn't apply to emailed me saying that my (rejected) app from another program landed in their lap and that they want me to apply (yes even this late). So I did and they said they would let me know as soon as my application is processed. I will be taking that offer... if it's made. the program is better. the guaranteed funding is better, I’ve already exchanged several emails with profs and the program chair (and over the long weekend!!!) and that kind of response is very appreciated and attractive.

Wow ! congrats .. that almost never happens. And with funding?! .. Amazing ..

I have already posted this in two other threads but what difference does it make!

Still nothing from my beloved univs in canada! Somebody wake them up!!!

They are so far north that probably they are having a brain freeze :D

  6. Its almost MAY. I am still waiting for my admission offers from 2 universities. At times like these, one begins to doubt whether the admission committee people are really on the planet we like to call, "THE EARTH". I am sure there are many like me, whose dream universities have kept them on a waitlist or not replying to their calls/emails. This is where u can express your frustration. Vent out your anger here people!

  7. Are you still on the waitlist? I had received rejection on 20th April. F***! They made me hopefully waiting for nearly two moths and finally give me a rejection .....waitlist means nothing...

YES, I am still on the waiting list! They have asked me to call next Tuesday (3rd of May) and said that I will hopefully get a final decision. =( . Whats taking them so long?

  8. I think most schools have a general goal of the number of students they want to admit to their program for a coming year. Say for example, say Department A is looking to bring in about 20 students a year. If in the past years, they have found that about 50% of the people that they accept will decide to come to school and study in Department A. So Department A sends out about 35-40 acceptance letters in the first wave. Department A also sets aside a separate list of candidates, the wait list, which they dig into if they don't achieve their quota, or decide that they want to raise their quota a bit. So in the example given, if only 18 of the admitted students decide to come to Department A, then Department A will dig into their wait list to try and get to 20ish students.

To answer your question of what your chances are would be hard. It would depend on how many students Stanford's CEM program is looking to take for Fall 2011, and your position on the waitlist (some schools rank applicants on the waitlist)

Disclaimer: I'm not 100% sure what I said is right, but it is sort of the assumption I made after reading through these forums the past few months.

    I sent them a mail asking about my wait-list ranking .. no reply .. :| ..

I called the university and they said, " You will hear about the final decision ummm... next week ( long pause) ..... maybe".

I was like "Thank you very much. You have been extremely helpful".

  9. 1,2 &4) My acceptance letter came by snail mail dated the 18th of February.

    3) They offered me a $30,000 fellowship at 5:00 pm yesterday (the 14th).

They offered me a TA position with the remainder of tuition plus a yet to be determined amount today.

Moral of the story: April 14th is still early to these people!

This is why Stanford kicks Berkeley's ass:

    1) Berkeley has not offered funding.

    2) Berkeley has not offered funding.

    3) Berkeley has not offered funding.

    Congratulations!

30K is very good .. They haven't replied to any of my mails (total 7) and phone calls (total 5) in the last 15 days. Really anxious .. I heard that they send out mails before 15 th april. Was awake till 3 am that night :( . I wonder if their letter is taking way too long to come to me coz i am an international student. Whoever suggested the name 'snail' mail must be an applicant of Stanford I'm sure. :D .. Ohh well .. off to checking my inbox every 10 minutes then .. Btw, how much time do you have to accept the admit? Do you know anyone whom i can contact to get some info about my admit status?

  11. I also have been admitted to Stanford, but for the Structural Engineering & Geomechanics program. I too have not yet heard any funding decisions. I was told in the letter that I would be notified by the end of March, then emailed that they would be making the decisions the week after spring break, and still nothing. I have sent professors emails concerning funding, and so I assume I will hear back either way. What is the deal?

    1. When did you get notified?

    2. How did you get notified?

    3. Did you get any aid?

    4. Did u get unofficial or official mail?
