for the people in pittsburgh or familiar with it: is getting a one-bedroom apartment in a decent area possible for under $600?
i should add that i don't necessarily care about being super close to campus (30 minute walk or bike ride is okay by me) but i do care about being in a neighborhood with a decent cafe, grocery stores/markets, interesting types of buildings/houses to live in, a sense of community. i'm from a major city that has lots of little neighborhoods and i'd like something similar.
I visited some time ago, and met some folks with decent one-bedroom apartments around $600, so it seems like they're not impossible to find. If you find something on the bus route, you should be fine without a car.

And like mentalyoga I was advised not to mention people by name in my SOP and not to contact profs because of departmental politics. This is probably one of the biggest reasons why I only got one acceptance. So if you haven't done that, I would. Get introductions from your academic friends or just get email addresses from the department websites.
So interesting to hear people's views on name-dropping. I did last year, and, granted the rest of my application was rather weak, I didn't get in anywhere. This time around, I decided I would go for the no-name approach. It worked out alright. I think it's important to convey fit throughout your SoP so that the folks you could work with would be obvious to the admissions committee, even if you don't spell it out. But that's just my take..

I guess Duke Literature and Berkeley Rhetoric also make the list. And I'm adding Rochester Visual and Cultural Studies, only because I'm in there!

I emailed Dr Kidd again yesterday. I'm in for the Master's program, with guaranteed funding for the PhD should I decide to continue on. They will be calling MA admits later this week. I got an email because I'm abroad.

I'm finishing up my undergraduate degree at Mount Holyoke.
Hey -- I was '08 at MHC! Maybe I know you? And Congrats on your acceptance!

I emailed some time ago and was told that the admissions committee were reviewing applications for the MA this past Friday. Dr Kidd said I was free to check with him whenever, but I haven't yet.

By mid-March, and by mail. Though the results posted say "by email" so I don't know.

I haven't heard either. I'm expecting a rejection soon, but I guess I'll have to wait for it. When I emailed the department to ask about my status, they said to wait for the Graduate School to inform me.

Hi all -- I just found this thread!
I've been accepted to Pitt for English/Film Studies, and Rochester's Visual and Cultural Studies (if this counts!). Not really waiting on anyone else -- I'm assuming I'll be getting my Brown MCM rejection soon.

Hi all.
I just declined my offer for the MA. I don't know if the waiting list is divided by field, but I was in for their Comics and Visual Rhetoric track. Hope someone hears good news.
