  1. this may be a silly question but does anyone know..for the Title IV statement, it says 2 pages..do they mean single or double spaced? is anyone else applying??

I am applying for it. I think they mean 2 pages double spaced. But you should call the department just to be sure.

  2. @FutureMSW2012: It's between USC and UCLA for me! What was your rationale in applying to just UCLA? What have you heard about the program? What are some big sellers about the program for you! Trying to make my mind up! Hope we see each other this fall!

When I went to visit the department everyone was very warm and inviting. I met with faculty, staff and students and everyone made me feel like they wanted me in the program. With the department being so small, there are great opportunities to really get to know the faculty for research and mentorship. With only 100 students in each cohort, its easier to get to know everyone and develop a support system through the grad process. I am not sure what you are looking for in a program but I keep highlighting support because when I was researching schools that was a really big deal to me.

I also like the internship placements but from what I hear they are very similar to USC and some of the Cal States. I have heard that UCLA's curriculum is going through some transitions. I do not know if this would be considered a negative or a positive but I think it is important to note.

Ultimately, the biggest sellers for me was cost and location. I could not find a reason to justify paying for USC. I also live on the westside and I wanted to stay in my apartment and not have to relocate my family.

In the end, both are great schools. So I think you will be okay with whichever one you choose. :)

  3. Yeah, I think you're right... The award letter were only loans. I think the merit scholarship would be in April if you're waiting for that.

What is the merit scholarship? I guess I won't be getting that because I did not even know about it :(

  4. Was the awards letter from the UCLA graduate division or from the Department of Social Welfare? If they're like any other school, the grad division solely gives out loans/work study. It's the department that is responsible for notifying you of scholarships, grants, etc.

The awards letter was through the financial aid office so I am not sure if it was put together by the graduate division or the Social Welfare department.

  5. Has anyone received notification from the UCLA grad division? My acceptance letter said to wait for it, but how long will it take? I need to get back to USC before April 6th.

I stopped by UCLA's Graduate Division office today and the person I spoke to said that usually people receive the official letter from them 2 weeks after they receive their letter from the department.

  6. I have not received UCLA Graduate Division's formal notification. My understanding is that we officially accept the offer when we complete the statement of intent to register and statement of legal residency from UCLA Graduate Division.

I have not received anything from the Graduate Division either. I really need them to hurry up and send me something because I cannot view my financial aid awards letter until I complete the SIR. But I cannot complete the SIR until I receive the formal notification from the Graduate Division.

  7. For those who are planning on accepting UCLA, have you received an email from the graduate division... or do you accept the invitation through email with Lance?

I have not received an email from the the graduate division but I emailed Lance and let him know that I was accepting the offer and I plan to attend in the Fall.

  8. Hi Future MSW 2012 (and congrats to you!),

Just due to proximity and geographical location (I live in Northern California), UC Berkeley was my fist choice but I was denied. Don't get me wrong. I'm SUPER excited about UCLA and was quite surprised that I even got in. But now all of these logistics are popping up. The obvious being that I live 400 miles away. The second is that I'm married. But a nice caveat is that I'm from LA and my mom still lives there. If push comes to shove I'll just live w/ her. But there a million things I need to consider before making a decision. I'm still waiting to hear from SF State and USC (which is where I went for undergrad). Sigh...

    Thank you!

I am sorry to hear about Berkeley. I can completely understand having to work out the logistics. That was one of the major reasons why UCLA was my top choice. I am from Southern California and I did not want to have to move my family to another city or state. If you get into SF State will you go there instead?

  9. Congrats!!!!!!! When did you hear?! What did the email say if you don't mind sharing? =D

I heard yesterday. The email said:

    Dear XXXXX,

Congratulations on your admission to the MSW Program at UCLA!

Please find the attached admission letter from Professor Fernando Torres-Gil, Chair of the Social Welfare Department.

    Save the Date!

    April 10, 2012

Welcome Day for newly admitted MSW students

    Go Bruins!
