  1. Hey guys,

I think your GRE profile is very good, in comparison with mine.

    Verbal: 520 (67%)

    Quant: 800 (93%)

    Writing: 4.0 (37%)

    GRE CS: Not taken

I was rejected in Ph.D. program, and just got admitted in MS Program without any funding info. I got a BS Degree outside US.

  2. Hmm. In that case, to anyone that got accepted to UM Ann Arbor:

    • [*:2x6xq9rf]It is one hour away from Flint (one of the most dangerous cities in the US).
[*:2x6xq9rf]It is one hour away from Detroit (equal danger, more sparse).
      [*:2x6xq9rf]Michigan has terrible weather.
[*:2x6xq9rf]Virtually no public transportation in the area.
[*:2x6xq9rf]Ann Arbor is full of hippies. I like hippies, so this isn't a problem for me.
[*:2x6xq9rf]At your graduation ceremony you are required to snatch your diploma away from a rabid wolverine.

Just kidding folks. Follow your heart. :)

You are not kidding, man. I lived in Detroit and it is terrible. Walking around, I have to be aware of being robbed or bullied. There was a grad student get shot while working. I am moving out of this sucking city.

  3. Hi guys,

just wanted to tell you that I am still waiting for Columbia as well...

    My stats are:

GPA: 80% in the first two years (British uni - 70% is an A), 4.1/4.0 third year (exchange at very good US Uni)

    Publications: 0 as well ;)

    GRE: Verbal 570 (79%), Quant 770 (88%), CS 820 (85%)

I applied to systems, which area did you guys apply to?

P.S.: Some people on the results board posted that they got an email stating "Applications are still being reviewed and as soon as a decision is made on your application you will be notified by email.". Did you get that? (because I didn't?)

I applied to systems, too. I didn't received an email either. May be that was a reply email for one who inquiry for status. In the worst case, those guys are on wait-list, and we are out. :(

  4. nicholysseus, thank you for you comment. I am seeking for housing in Madison too. I will be there for Fall 2009. I am considering taking an apartment at Main Street. The price is reasonable for an intl student like me. Do you have any ideas about living there?

  5. My understanding is that stipends are pretty much standardized within a department. You might be able to push for a fellowship or something if those come with higher stipends at that school. If you ask me, just be happy with your offers as-is... this isn't a job search.

Agree, one of my friend used this trick and got a 4k fellowship, in addition to TAship.

  6. I submitted just couple of days before the deadline and received my admission letter in February. So they definitely do not use FCFS

I submitted 3 weeks before the deadline, and I got a rejection. So definitely you guys are on wait-list. It's a good news. Congrats!

  7. Did anybody hear from this program yet? I called them a couple of weeks back and they said that results will be out only after March 15th. Somebody posted an admit today though.

What happen to them? I don't hear from them, either. It might be due to financial crisis. The professor I contacted said that "you are applying in the worst year ever, probably no financial aid for international student, even the professor has his paycheck cut off". Oh man, I am an international student.

  8. nowhereman,

I haven't heard anything from them either... Did you ask them what's going on? If not, can you share your stats so we can figure out what's happening with us?

    My stats:

    GPA: 4.0.

    Rank: 1/350.

    Publication: 9 (4 international, 5 national)

    GRE: Verbal 520 (67%), Quant: 800 (94%)

    Toefl: 108

    Award: some, but not significant

I don't know what happens then. This institute has a very early deadline, but their decisions are lagged behind.

  9. I have been accepted to the PhD program in both institutions. Full financial aid and equivalent stipend for both programs. I am interested in Computer Vision / Computer Graphics / Machine Learning. According to the US News & World Report ranking in Computer Science, UMaryland CP ranks #13 and SUNY Stony Brook ranks #31. For other subjects like Math they rank roughly the same UMCP #21 SUNY-SB #24. I am also aware that SUNY Stony Brook is a little over an hour from New York City and UMCP is just a few minutes from Washington DC. I want to seek a job in academia after my PhD, in this regard both institutions have alumni as faculties at other schools. UMCP has a professor in U of Toronto and a professor in UW Madison (Both in Computer Vision). Stony Brook has 2 professors in Utah (Both in Visualization) and the current president of Stanford. UMCP has a long history while Stony Brook has a little over 50 years, in this regard SB has a remarkable reputation growth rate. My professors at Stony Brook will be young motivated researchers graduated at top institutions (MIT, Berkeley, UPenn) while my professors at UMaryland CP will be mostly seniors.

Probably this information will be helpful to others as well :)

Please share your thougths with me. Which one would you recommend me from this information and other information that you might have.

I prefer UMCP, since everything seems equivalent, except the ranking. I think that counts when seeking for job after Ph.D.

  10. The computer vision lab (CVL) is one of the laboratories of the Center for Automation Research (CFAR) at the UMD. The lab is the collaboration between people working in vision in both the CS and ECE departments. Prof. Rama Chellappa (ECE) and Prof. Larry Davis (CS) are two big names in the computer vision community. They are very highly regarded by fellow researchers. You can check Google Scholar to have an idea of the impact of their research. One additional information, the "godfather of computer vision" (in Kanade's words), Prof. Azriel Rosenfeld (deceased), was the director of CFAR. Furthermore, their research projects cover most areas in computer vision, ranging from tracking, surveillance, object recognition to face recognition, learning in vision, etc...

I'm gonna turn down a fellowship offer from a top 10 CS department to go to UMD.

Aries, so you made up your mind. I plan to go to Wisconsin, and I can't see you there :), what a pitty!
