  1. Thanks, trevortiger. That's good advice. I looked up deadlines for some of my schools, and it appears I would need to take the test again if I follow my current timeline. I'll probably still take it in case circumstances change.
  2. Bump. Are older scores generally looked upon less favorably? Why would this be? I'm not being contrarian; I would just like to know whether it would make me seem uncommitted or whether the scores would be viewed as not representative....
  3. Honestly, I am taking it because of the 50% discount. I am firmly committed to pursuing a Ph.D. after gaining work/more research experience. I figured that the scores are good for 5 years, so why not? Do POIs really look down on older scores?
  4. So, in general GRE scores are good for 5 years. Does this mean that I would have to apply to grad programs by September 2016 if I take the Sept. GRE this year? Would I be able to use these scores if I submitted applications in October or November of 2016? Sorry if this seems like an obvious question.
  5. Thanks, juilletmercredi. But what if the MA GPA is significantly higher than that of the BA? Will the MA still be weighted more, even when adcoms compare me to applicants with high undergrad GPAs? I worry that my initial performance in college will prevent me from achieving my goals.
  6. How is masters coursework factored into GPA, if at all?
  7. Hey, (hopefully) quick piggy-back questions: 1) What if you are graduating with more than 4 years of undergrad?, 2) If the last 2 years are split between two schools, how would you report that GPA? Thank you.
  8. Hey Everyone, I would really appreciate any insight you might have into this process. I know exactly the type of program (and research topics) I would like to pursue. However, my current GPA precludes applying before obtaining a second degree. If anyone has successfully navigated a similar situation, is currently navigating, or knows of someone who has overcome an initially underwhelming performance, please share. I'm just trying to figure out the best way to attain my goals. Is grad work generally weighted more if the program is rigorous and research-based? What about a better performance at a strong, non-elite grad school following a low GPA at an Ivy? Would an upward trend toward the end of undergrad coupled with high grades/strong recs from a masters program make me competitive for top programs? Thank you in advance for any thoughts or suggestions!
  9. Hi, When applying to Ph.d. programs for psych (cognitive/neuro), how are post-graduate transcripts viewed? Specifically, are GPAs combined for 1) a first and second bachelors or 2) a bachelors and masters? Would the original degree hold more weight, or is the more recent considered more relevant? Does anyone have any experience getting into a solid (~top-30) program with a low undergraduate GPA and higher MA GPA, assuming positive recommendations and meaningful research experience? Thanks a bunch!
