  1. I am an International Grad Student here in the US. Recently, my school has been sending me to my practicum site for practice. However, my supervisor has been making me racially and culturally insensitive comments. Whenever she gives feedback, she usually adds in extra irrelevant sentences such as, "because of your cultural background, you are...", "because you speak several languages, hence English isn't your first language, so..." or "English isn't your first language, so the you need to be careful of your pronunciation, or else people will mishear and test results will be affected." English IS my first language, except I went to schools that were influenced by British English, but not so much of American English. It is very disheartening to hear someone make assumptions without even finding more about me. Also, I do fake an American accent so that people will not "mishear" and obtain the best possible test results. Every time I head off to my practicum site, I prepare myself to receive feedback which includes unnecessary information about my background. In fact, I feel so unwelcome there and I feel that I am not helping the practicum site, but causing more trouble due to my diversity. I am not sure if I should tell my adviser because I do not want the situation to blow up. I only have a month or so left at the site, but these negative comments are getting into me and making me uncertain of my abilities and my future. Thanks.
  2. Hi, do you have any information if the General Edu Psych program has any courses on counseling? I am weighing between two options. Another school is offering classes on counseling. I have looked at the McGill website and classes such as Helping relationships and practicum: interviewing skills touch on counseling techniques, but they are not called "counseling". I have emailed the school administration but as usual, they are always slow in replying. That's why I am trying here. I have been accepted into General Edu Psych program by the way.
  3. Hi everyone, I am applying for MEd/MA in School Counseling/Psychology for Fall '14. I am only applying for coursework-based Masters program and I have already submitted my application for the 3 Canadian schools. However, I did not specify which faculty member I want to work with, since I thought coursework-based Masters program usually does not have a faculty member mentoring the student. Before I start applying for the 5 to 6 US schools this coming January, I would like to seek your opinion. Is it necessary to name a faculty member I want to work with in my SOP? I understand this is mandatory for PhD applicants, but will it sound outrageous for coursework-based MA applicants?
  4. Hi to all, I am an international student from University at Buffalo. I am looking to continue my studies after I have finished my BA by doing an MA because I believe currently, I do not have the research experience to enter a PhD program. I am exploring schools outside the US since I am an international student and I am considering both the Australian and Canadian universities. My concern with the Australian system is that it is not easy for people with US degrees because I will have to take a year of postgraduate diploma in Australia to be eligible to enroll into an Australian MA program. What about the Canadian system? Since Canada and US are so close to each other, there should be many students who cross the border and Canadian schools should recognize US degrees more than the Australians do.
  5. I hope I am not giving you the wrong information but according to my professors, entry into MA is a lot easier than PhD. MA is sadly still a business transaction in which they charge and you take courses to get the certificate while a PhD is an investment and the school has to put in resources to develop you. I have been recommended to take a MA so that it will be easier for me to enter any PhD program. So don't worry too much.
