  1. Well, it's too late, but you confirmed what I thought :)

I chose UW. It was hard to say no to MIT and I have a feeling that some people here will say that I am just plain stupid, but considering the circumstances and the research in what I want to do, I decided UW is the best option of the two.

  2. I got into MIT and I am trying to decide between it and UW. The problem with my MIT application is that they assign you to an adviser in advance and he (or she) is in charge on your funding. Basically, it seems like my ass belongs to that particular professor and I am stuck with him.

The problem is that my personal impression from that particular professor is not very good. Ont he professional level he is really good, but on the personal level I am not sure it will be such a good match in the long run. I heard it's possible to switch advisers, but it's problematic with funding. Anyone here form MIT that can shed some light on my problem?

I will be happy to get some opinions about the professors there, but I prefer doing it in private messages. So PM me if you have you know the CSAIL professors well.

    Thanks

  3. It's not like I am going to decide about what I hear here, but it will be nice to hear what people think when you have the two schools compared. I know that in the field that I want to focus in (NLP) the two schools are considered pretty good and present somewhat different approaches to the problems. That is why I asked to know the reasoning behind the preference.

  4. I submitted my application right on the deadline and got an early admission in the middle of January, so it got nothing to do with the submission date

However, I have no idea what is going there right now and if they are still planning to send more positive replies

  5. I have a few offers from some good schools and I am contemplating about trying to push one of the offers a bit higher (stipend wise) using the others, because basically this is the one that I find the most interesting at the moment.

Do you think this might work? What kind of 'raise' can I get?

If there's anyone here with experience with this problem, it will be very helpful

  6. Hey,

I have a few questions about financial support (specifically, I want information about PhD in Computer Science):

    1. How much is the average monthly stipend now days?

    2. Is there any standard about summer optional research work?

    3. What should I expect regarding the length of promised funding (for example, one university offered promised funding for 3 years and afterwards I am supposed to join a professor's research).

    Thanks
