  1. Excellent news Safferz and TMP!!! COngrats to you and all others with good news. Keep strong, KK and those who are going through the dark right now You're brave, smart, virtually friendly and warm people and you'll get something good, I hope.
  2. Congratulations to those who were admitted and commiserations to those who heard that they didn't fit!
  3. Haha, puts things in/out of perspective
  4. Great Yale Sample Book Review?
  5. Great opening line for a History PhD SOP.
  6. I think TMP etc. were being supportive. I know I was being supportive when I suggested that you didn't contact POIs in the middle of selections. There's a difference between being supportive and being sycophantic. However, I hope it doesn't hurt your chances
  7. I definitely wouldn't call. i don't even know their phone numbers. And I don't want to know. Can you imagine how awful it would be if they angrily dismissed/rejected/brushed you aside by phone? Or worse, if they were on the fence about you and your irritating phone call pushed you from the fence to the thorn filled ditch?
  8. Congratulations Owls!
  9. Congratulations KK!
  10. Oseirus! You look so cute against that flag! Yea, don't know why my comment got voted down...
  11. Hey Oseirus! I think next week is acceptance week for the Harvards Columbias et al. Just looking at the last couple of years. So if you don't hear next week, it's bye-bye for those schools. Is your avatar really you Oseirus?
  12. I just want it to be the end of next week already. There was so much nervous chatter on here over the last 2 days...very few results or actual news. Hope everybody can hang in there
  13. Congrats, diplodocus! Wonderful news
  14. well done taybaxter!!!
  15. I say most of us hear nothing this week. Looking at last year, the likelihood for many schools is that next week is the big one. Some of the lucky ones may hear from POIs. But I say this is going to be the most agonizing, poisonous week yet.
  16. Safferz thanks for the in depth description! Good luck!
  17. Congratulations Safferz! I'm sure they think you're good, so remember that in the interview! Knock em' dead!!!
  18. Right, like there isn't also stress in non-grad school work environments. The point is we all want this badly. Indeed many of us are trying to escape from working environments which make what you describe seem almost heavenly.
  19. My cat was a veritable rock until I found out that she had gotten an interview (by email) with Yale last Friday. Now I giggle nervously around her and congratulate her when she successfully fits through the catflap or finishes her lunch. I've begun to consider having her declawed.
  20. PUPPIES: SO MUCH COOLER THAN GRAD SCHOOL! GET HER/HIM!!!
  21. LOL, yeah. I mean, it's hard to work out whether there is anything "happening" or if a lot of this is just in our heads. I mean, I guess it's true that Yale is happening, but then it's happening so soon after we got that weird email from them re. Is everything complete" or whatever. I also find it weird that places with super early deadlines like Berkeley are not coming out with anything at all. Anyways, whether this week is truly illuminating or filled with hearsay that obtains the gravity of official fact, i guess we will just wait and see. I'd go to last year's chit chat, but I should probably do something more constructive! Good luck all!
  22. I think dukelover rightly describes this as the week when decisions are really being made. Notifications may well go out into February. But I guess that profs want to clear it all up before that. So I imagine a small number of people will hear, but almost all decisions will be made this week, even if notifications don't go out until the following two weeks. Hearing about the Yale interviews has made me very nervous. I guess that not hearing must be a bad sign. Although I also think phone conversations are a really stupid way to pick people. Or even confirm that "you could work with this person" etc etc. THat said, I got a number of notes about missing bits from my files last week, which I'm bizarrely taking as a positive as it at least means they are being sent forward to somebody to review!!! Congrats to those who did get a chat with Yale though!
  23. I guess just from looking at British qualified professors I've know either at Columbia, or at other schools I'm shooting for. They were mostly of the distinguished older variety: worked at a big UK school, wrote something huge, and came over here for the $$$/better work conditions. I guess I haven't come across many freshly minted PhDs starting regular tenure track. Perhaps others can think of some. I can't. That's my unscientific two cents. I think not doing the 2 year MA that we do in the US makes them less attractive as generalists for the purpose of teaching UGs but I could be talking crap, as I don't know the UK system particularly well.
  24. I'm hearing ya! Some of those British PhDs can be even be applied for up until the summer, I think. For example University of London I think. I haven't even looked into the funding situation though: I'm assuming that as an American, I would have hardly any chance of getting money there. On the other hand, I think there are a lot of academics at the top US schools with UK PhDs. Though you're less likely to be able to start out your career with one, that's for sure.
  25. Congrats! Guess you don't want to tell which school, but good to hear some movement! Hope it works out well for you!
