Hey everybody, so I was accepted for a PhD in engineering and I have the choice between 2 advisers, my research interests are aligned with both advisers so that isnt really the issue.

one research group is sort of big with a famous prof. (i think they are 40 people) and so even though its a wonderful opportunity I have these feelings that I my apprenticeship would not be as good.

on the other the second group is smaller and surely the prof. will have more time to devote in terms of consulting and discussing things.

so i do wonder what are your thought in this matter. would love to hear your opinion

so in my admission letter my university wrote "Full support of tuition and stipend as a graduate research assistant for the duration of the Ph.D. and then they said the stipend would be $29k

I know it might sound silly to ask this but i just wanted to make sure. does it mean they would pay my tuition and the stipend wonldn't be charged for tuition?

do you happen to know what is the tax that i have to pay for the stipend?

i called the department directly to get results.... didnt get in.... talking to the admission guys is useless but department was helpful

Berkeley just made their decisions and sending answers through the next week or so

i called Eng. dep. @ harvard and they told me the results.... not admitted.... fortunately i got into other good schools as well ...but it could have been nice going there

Harvard said decisions should be rendered no later than Mar 15 and Caltech no later than April 1

well thank you very much, but nothing comes as a free ride cause i busted my ass to achieve this :-) i am amazed though at how early they gave me an answer and i am still waiting on other schools to respond.

do you have a good estimation of how much would i be left with after tax?

on my acceptance letter to university of michigan they wrote " All types of support will provide similar funding with a stipend of $2,200 a

month, plus tuition, fees, and health benefits."

does this mean that i would actually get $2200 and that there is a tuition remission or it means that they take the tuition off that?? in other words what am i left with?
