SLP/Communication Disorders Masters Applicants

My application status says: "referred" Does anyone know what this means exactly? -
I think you should create a discussion about this topic. I have been trying to think of everything I can but it's hard. Plus I want to start picking things up here and there when I have the money too rather than one big shopping spree, and any advice would be great!

When I log in to check my application status it says "referred." Does anyone know what this means? (it's for East Tennessee State)

Thank you! Congratulations with your acceptances so far

Yes, this whole process is so stressful as you all know...but this is just getting beyond ridiculous. However, from my prospective I have not received any information wait list, acceptance, or rejection from any of the schools I have applied to...so it's not like I have to worry about deciding between schools. I just hope one takes me and tells me soon! At least the 2-3 week period gives me a time frame so that I won't go crazy wondering when I'll hear something.
-
So I just found out that it will be about 2-3 weeks until I hear back from all the schools that I have applied to. Oh my goodness gracious I am going to lose my mind!

My undergrad started doing that. When I was a sophomore I had to apply to the CD department and if I was not accepted I would have had to wait (which the school did not want to happen) transfer to another school, or change my major. Luckily I was accepted, but so were 124 others. I just really think these programs need to sit down and make some serious adjustments...and make sure that seniors really understand how competitive this is.

I agree 100%! I truly believe that these graduate programs need to wake up. The numbers and acceptance statistics just do not make sense. From my undergrad experience there were about 125 that graduated in CSD. When you break everything down the numbers don't add up. Sure, you have to take into account that some students do not go on into a master's degree, but the majority do...and I'm not much of a math person but if I think about my undergrad school alone--125 graduated in my class alone and 25 got in. Hello, earth to graduate schools....there are so many exceptional students ready to be audiologists and speech-language pathologists and the projection of this field is growing and needed throughout the country. So how about accepting more students into graduate programs....this 25-30 number blows my mind. Sorry for the rant, I'm just soooooooo tired of this!

I just wanted to share what I can about UCF. I really wanted to go there and applied last year and this year. I have a strong GPA, my GRE isn't outstanding but it isn't terrible, I was on my undergrad NSSLHA board, worked during undergrad as a speech-language rehabilitation aide, I received a Bachelors of Health Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders with a minor in education (from the University of Florida) and after getting my bachelor's degree I began working as a speech-language pathology assistant (for the same company that I was previously an aide). I got a lot of experience working with children and rotated between a private school that specializes in working with students with dyslexia, and I rotated to the private peds clinic and a preschool. I am not trying to ramble of stats or sound snobby...I just wish someone would have given me a realistic perspective. I mean I feel like I am qualified and I am so, SO passionate about this field. But, unfortunately I sit here and cry and can totally relate to what you are going through. I was rejected from all 6 schools I applied to last year. I have an interview tomorrow via Skype...and that is my first and only slight chance that I have had at getting in. I applied to UCF this year for the spring and was rejected...not even wait listed. I do not want to scare you and I know this is just one experience that I have had with that school. Obviously someone is getting in and after researching I really thought I had a better chance of getting in for spring. I recently ran into two girls who are at UCF for SLP grad, and they were sitting next to me at Starbucks stressing and studying for an exam. I realized they were studying artic and I asked them if they were in graduate school at UCF and how they liked it. They both complained the whole time...one was accepted with a business degree and the other had an education degree. So I'm sure the business student had an exceptional GRE and they education student had a flawless GPA. I am not trying to belittle that at all....obviously I wish I was in their position...but it's just completely frustrating and so confusing how and why they choose who they do.

Yes, I have worked in Florida. I worked for a clinic and rotated between the office/clinic, private school, and preschool. In Florida if you work for a school you go through the hiring progress with the school. Depending on the city/county there are various certifications and processes that a school takes in hiring an SLPA. Whereas in my case, I worked for a clinic so I had to get my license through the Florida Department of Health. Once you have found a company to work for they will help you complete the license application because they have to fill out the portion of the application which explains in detail what your position will entail and who your supervisor will be. There are jobs throughout the state. When searching online I have found that there are very few postings in Florida. However, I assure you there are plenty of jobs you just have to take the time to call many locations. Don't get discouraged if some tell you no or tell you that they don't hire SLPAs, because there are plenty of places in need of SLPAs. Good luck with your search!

It's great that you are already getting information about graduate school and working on narrowing down your list. I went to UF undergrad and it was wonderful! The University of Florida was my dream school and I am so glad that I had the opportunity to go there and make memories that will last a lifetime! As far as graduate school goes...they eat and breathe research. Depending on what area you want to focus on, if you are thinking about applying to UF you should consider what area you want to specialize in and start communicating with professors in that department. I know Dr. Altmann is normally on the admissions board so you may want to start talking to her or gathering info if you are interested in any of her areas: http://slhs.phhp.ufl.edu/people/faculty/altmann/ She is...different. If she comes across rude in e-mails don't pay it mind, but she is on the board and teaches undergrad and grad and knows what she is talking about when it comes to lang in the brain, phonetics/linguistics. Also, Dr. Logan is WONDERFUL! He focuses on Speech/Motor. If you're interested in language/early intervention Mrs. Vinson is a go-to she is also on the board and is a undergrad/grad professor, director of grad, and an undergrad advisor. She has a lot on her plate but is always extremely helpful. Finally, if neuro is your interest Dr. Edmonds is your person. She does a lot of research, teaches grad/undergrad, and specializes in bilingual aphasia (spanish). I hope this info helps! Research these professors, talk with them, and if you apply research UF, Shands, and the clinical opportunities....mention any contact with professors and interests in their specific classes/research. UF is a very, very proud school and the Gator Nation is everywhere and they pride themselves on that. Good luck with your future applications and I hope this helps....if you have anymore questions about UF don't hesitate to ask.

Hi all! I applied last year and was rejected to all 6 schools that I applied to. This is my second year applying and although I have received another rejection I have finally been offered an interview! I am going through the waiting game with 3 more schools. This interview gives me hope. I am so passionate about this field and I have been working toward making this as a career since my first experience shadowing a SLP in high school. Each rejection hurts more than the last, but ultimately there is nothing I can do about it. I graduated from UF and majored in CSD and minored in education. My GPA is competitive and I have a lot of experience working in the field during undergrad and as a SLPA after I graduated. But, rejection after rejection come in and it's frustrating, hurtful, and really confusing. I keep asking myself what I'm doing wrong but I am so grateful for the interview opportunity. It only takes one! Keep your heads up and don't give up!

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas or information about writing samples given during interviews? I have an interview coming up and they have a writing sample portion that has to be completed within 30 minutes prior to the interview. I researched and almost everything I found about interviews and writing samples were giving suggestions on creating or choosing a sample to bring with you to an interview. However, because this sample is done just before the interview I wanted to get an idea of what to expect. Any info and suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks, and good luck to everyone with their applications

Speech Masters: Do I have a chance?
kd0110 replied to alderdn's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am in somewhat of the same boat. I graduated in May from the University of Florida, and my CSD GPA is a 3.44 and my overall is higher. I decided not to go straight into grad school this fall so I am applying for fall admission for 2012. I took the revised GRE and got the equivalent of an 800--Quantitative:139=390 new, Verbal Reasoning: 147=410 old, Analytical Writing: 4.0 I have worked as a slp rehab aid during my junior and senior year, and after getting my bachelors I worked for several months as an SLPA. Although our GRE scores are low I still think that when they look at the GPA, letters of rec, resume, letter of intent and so on that will count for a lot too. I am a TERRIBLE standardized test taker and am awful in the math department. I am planning on taking the GRE one more time in 2 weeks. My friends who I graduated with in May, and are already in grad school, said that their scores increased they 2nd time around especially since they had a better idea of what to expect. Focus on the Verbal Reasoning section...try to look over test strategies and just practice! A lot of schools want that 1000 but if you can aim for a 450 in the verbal and at least a 4.0 in writing someone will accept you. I am applying to a lot of schools in the south, one of them in University of Alabama and they say that they will accept conditional students meaning if you didn't make the 1000 cut as long as you get a 3.0 in 12 hours your first semester your fine. So for students like us, who do well in school just bad on these types of tests, thats promising. Also, UCF and FSU aren't listing a score this year due to the new GRE, so look out for some schools like that.....fingers crossed that this works in our favor! Good Luck with applying, hopefully this time next year we are finishing up our first semester of grad school
