  1. After all this waiting, it so refreshing to start getting results! A POI from TC, one of my top choices, reached out to schedule an interview! I almost screamed...mostly because I feel like I've been holding my breath on an emotional rollercoaster. I spent all last week asking why I applied to any PhD program because there was no way that I would be admitted. I know that seems over the top but this whole process has caused a lot of doubting!...
  2. THAT IS SOOOOO AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! Congrats!
  3. I almost feel like it's their job to seem as vague as possible concerning whether or not they're interested so I wouldn't read too much into it! As stated, the fact that they are interviewing you has to be positive so I'd try to just wait the few days as calmly as possible. As I type this, I realize how difficult that will be, but it's worth a try. At this point, your chances of admission are very high. You're on the short list! Good luck!
  4. I am a first generation college grad/ from a working class family as well! Thanks for starting this thread for those us of applying this season....It is really difficult. I think that we end up spending a lot of time "figuring out" graduate school when most people might just ask a relative and get sound advice. With that said, building a network of "friends/advisors in academia" quickly becomes really essential.
  5. Congrats (litjust and hitomimay)!!! That is super exciting. The waiting game is way harder than I thought so I can only imagine how it feels to know something!..... I definitely wouldn't be nervous if you haven't received any communication from schools. Some schools are still on break and the professors/admissions committees haven't even met yet. According the the Inside Penn GSE blog, they will be sending out invites for their interview weekend in two weeks. Hope this helps!
  6. Considering the economy, they probably don't have money to fund new phds students....lots of universities are decreasing phd admissions and increasing masters spots
  7. I'm applying to Penn GSE & Columbia as well with the same focus. I got my masters at Penn. One great thing is that they have really close connections with the Phila School District so that will provide you with opportunities to do research in a large urban school district. They also have a joint PhD with the sociology dept.....Dr. Annette Lareau is amazing and could add another dimension to your education studies.... I was considering Harvard but I felt like they might not be as interested in urban education. Who did you list as possible advisors? I felt like there was maybe one person and everyone else was kind of a stretch.
  8. Hello all, I'm applying as well. All of my application deadlines have officially passed so just waiting now *fingers crossed*. I'm interested in urban education & sociology. I've applied to....Penn GSE (Ed, Culture, & Societies); NYU (Sociology of Education); Columbia (Sociology & Education)...I'm considering applying to Temple (Urban Ed PhD) but their application deadline is in January so that seems a bit far off to me! Good Luck!!!
