If a school only asks for one document, what they want is the research statement. Follow the prompt and unless it asks for your personal story, don't give it.
hmm...that's very nice suggestions. Thank you!!!

Hi guys
Thank you for your help if someone could answer this question: I want to apply for a phd program. Some schools require statement of purpose, and some schools require personal statement. I know that one is more professional ( talk more about research experience) while the other should show more interest in the subject. So I decide to write two of them.
But if the school only require ps, should I also talk about my research experience?

hi all
I wonder whether there're any good books or articles that we could read regarding how to do research in economics? Like what's the mentality in thinking about problem, what's the right way to go in research....

A literature review establishes where your dissertation ‘fits in' to the existing body of knowledge. However, many academic papers have very brief literature reviews, and sometimes they are confined to the introduction rather than being a separate section in their own right. When researching your dissertation, it is not uncommon to read 20-30 journal articles. These will form the basis of discussion in any literature review. As you will probably have to read some articles anyway, the reading burden is not excessive. Identifying which articles are important is a stumbling block. Asking members of your department or supervisors for key readings can get you started. Check out this link. Thank you very much for that.

hi dear all
I am a master student who is doing a project in economics now. I find that two problems are hard for me.
1. how to effectively organize literatures and provide a good literature review? Cos sometimes I need to search for a long time and then find that the literature exactly suits the issue that I am going to do. Also, is there any recommended book on how to do research work on economics?
2. How do you define and organize other people's contribution to the issue and figure out something that you can contribute? The question sounds easy but I am curious because everyone might have different thinking method and hope you could help me to figure that out.

I have a moleskin notebook that I use as an external brain.
Usually, ideas are written on whatevers handy to remember... And then when I get back home/to my desk, I get out my moleskin and transcribe the idea and add in any necessary additional details, references, etc.
I do usually keep a small pocket sized moleskin on me most of the time for quick idea notations, but it can also be a napkin, the back of a receipt, a voice notation on my ipod, etc. It's not so much about writing it down initially as getting it into a relatively permanent form.
Usually, as the idea progresses, I take the time to sit down and write up a semi-formal proposal in word, complete with citations and figures. Then I can either present it to my boss, or keep it in hold for the future when I have time to work on it.
Thanks for advising the proposal part. It sounds cool, we should do proposal quite often even without doing the whole research. That practice exercises our mind.
Any link of comprehensive exam questions?

Hi all
I am a first year Ph.D in Canada. The comprehensive exam is near, and I want to find some past comp questions from other universities ( better with answer keys as well). Could anyone do me a favour of giving a link? That would be very much appreciated.
