  1. Am I the only one who has stopped and questioned the idea that an associate professor of English at some liberal arts college has the nerve to publish articles under a pen name that strive to rid recent undergrads of their passion for a subject, of their goal to write, research and devout themselves to a area of humanities for the rest of their lives? Why should we listen to what this, Director of the Andrew W. Mellon foundation scholars foundation in arts and humanities has to say? I hope we are all sure enough of ourselves to take each word, each punctuation mark, with a massive heap of salt.
  2. I'm reading Erich Maria Remarque's Three Comrades, a novel of Germany between the wars. I've always felt that Remarque is one of the more underrated and under-appreciated writers of the 20th century. Also poking around in Marx's young writings, mostly the 1844 manuscripts.
  3. I started studying for the math portion of the GRE this week and I'm struggling mightily. I'm honestly wondering if it is worth my team to labor through a full weeks study (about 3-4 hours a day) of math if no progress is to be seen. I feel like I am only going to fry my brain more. I expect to score almost perfect on Verbal and would be very disappointed with anything lower than a 5.5 on Writing. So with that being said, are phil departments going to be pissed if my math score is something like a 140-150? In trying to get through the math review section of my study book I find myself loosing touch with the tiny bit of math knowledge that i have left. I took a stats class back in 2008, and haven't taken Algebra since 2006 and Geometry since 2005. Any advice?
  4. I'm entering my second week of GRE prep. I've been logging about 3-4 hrs a day and I'm feeling good about my preparation thus far. Today I took a post-test in one of my study books and did really well, only missing 3 out of 30 questions. However, one of the questions I got wrong has been driving me crazy and I was hoping some one on here might be able to provide me with an explanation for why the answer I chose is incorrect. It's a "choose the answer that gives the pair of words whose relationship is most like the relationship expressed in the pair of capitalized words.." question. CHAMPION : SUPPORT : I narrowed it down to two choices, C and E. I chose E) iconoclast : criticize, the answer was C) apologist : defend. I understand that apologists defend beliefs, ideas, etc. I also understand that Iconoclasts criticize current, widely-accepted ideas and beliefs. Why was I wrong?
  5. I graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 2011 with my degree in philosophy. I know that I am going to go on to pursue graduate work in philosophy. However, because I spent this past fall looking for "real" work instead of applying to schools I now find myself behind the 8 ball as far as applying for fall of 2012. I've already resigned and accepted the fact that I will be applying to grad school for the fall of 2013 but now I'm sort of stuck in the middle of an awkward period of time (18 or so months in front of me) in which I'll be applying to schools but am also interested in trying to find either a cool job that I could work for a year and then be off or perhaps some rewarding volunteer experiences or anything really. Does any one have any suggestions or ideas on how to fill the remaining time. I'm beginning to study for the GRE. I've mapped out a study schedule that will see me studying 6 days a week for the next 6 weeks. And I've also been in contact with all of the MA programs that I am interested in applying to. I'll also be working on my writing sample extensively during the next few months. But I'm looking for other ways to pass the time besides just grad school prep. Sure I could just find some work and pass the time before grad school that way. Just curious to know what others did during the years between undergrad and grad. Sean
  6. Man, this thread sure has had a lack of life. Just signed up for the grad cafe today. I'll be applying for entry into graduate school for the Fall of 2013. Still a ways away but figured I'd list the MA programs I've been looking at. I am looking to study continental philosophy, particularly German Philosophy (Hegel, Schopenhauer, Marx, Nietzsche, the Frankfurt School). The schools I will be applying to for an MA are: Warwick (UK) Loyola Chicago New Mexico Marquette New School Stony Brook Sussex (UK) Nottingham (UK) Toledo Boston U I think it's important for any one considering grad study in Phil to not forget to look at the programs overseas. The UK has quite a few programs that lean Continental, with Warwick being one of the best. I look forward to using this site and conversing with any one else pursuing graduate work in philosophy.
