My list is currently: (in no order, for MFA Painting)
UC Davis
UT Austin
U. North Texas
University of Oregon
U. Colorado-Boulder
West Virginia University
San Jose State
Feel free to let me know if you have any opinions on the quality of these programs! I'm especially interested in the reputation of West Virginia, San Jose State, and U. Colorado-Boulder. I will be seeking teaching opportunities after getting the MFA, and it seems like school reputation is a big part of getting a teaching position. Thanks for any feedback!
If you truly believe that, how come you aren't applying to any that have better reputations than the ones you've selected? IE: Yale, UCLA, UCI, RISD, CalArts, SFAI, CCA, etc etc. I'd say getting a job "blind" would be about reputation, but most teaching positions are granted on face to face interaction and networking, or possibly the schools you graduated from. Personally, I'd go for a school that gives you massive amounts of teaching experience. I'm going to UCSB and I'm TAing 2 classes or more for the rest of my stay here. As an employer, I'd think I'd want a candidate that has experience, not someone fresh from a "reputable" program that has 1 TA'ed class under their belt. Just my 2 pennies!
Agreed. You'll want to be instructor of record and you'll want a portfolio of STUDENT WORK to show.

cool!
they seemed super nice right?
Super nice. I couldn't really tell which one was which, because they sounded pretty much the same on speaker phone (kinda fuzzy...).

@ berto and liam.zev - What programs were you applying to at U. Oregon? I was told that painting applicants would be notified mid-to-late March...
I applied in sculpture.
I don't know what the time frame for painting is, but I know somebody who applied in painting and he has yet to hear back (so you're not alone!).

I just finished up an interview with University of Oregon.
overall I feel good about how it went. I was on speaker phone and had a hard time hearing them.
Simple questions.
also I was a little preoccupied by the pain from slicing open my finger from a new chisel this morning.
Thank god i didnt cut any nerves or tendons. getting the stiches was the most painful part. oieeeeeee.
Yeah, I just talked to them too. Super quick. Pretty basic questions. I feel fine about it.
Hope you're finger's doing ok!!!

Liam...When did you hear from Ohio State?
They called me last Thursday. It's unofficial I guess? I don't have an email or letter to go with it. Still, I'm happy about it

Hello,
Does anyone know anything about skype interviews vs. coming to the school?
I got two interview invitations so far, from Yale and MICA [yay].
Both schools have an option for skype interviews, but I wonder - how much am I ruining my chances to get accepted, if I use my right to save an 11 hour flight [and 1,000$] by choosing the skype option.
I anyone has an idea about this, I'll be glad to know.
Thanks!
I have no numbers to back it up, but I would think that interviewing in person would be preferable. Shows that you're serious about the program and allows for a more dynamic interview. Also avoids any technical problems (I don't know about you, but skype ALWAYS lags for me after about 20min of talking...) You also get to see tha facilities.
I would also consider whether you feel that your portfolio needs/could benefit from additional in-person explanation. Considering that you're applying for Graphic Design, it might not need any more context (compared with a portofilo in say, Sculpture/New Media etc.).
Plus, it's a helluva lot harder to turn somebody away when you've spent time with them, had lunch with them, gotten to know them as a person and an artist.
That being said, it is a huge amount of money AND time, and there's not guarantee that appearing in person will get you in.
Don't know if that helped... still doesn't fully address the question.
Does anybody have any stats that might address this question?

They still haven't told me
When did they tell you your date? Are you flying in?
They told me the same day (I requested Feb. 10 and they said it was fine). I'm flying in from PDX, so maybe they're trying to arrange the faraway visitors first? I feel like they should have told you by now.
Are you in state?

Did they tell you which day you are yet?
I'm going on Feb. 10. You?
///@Outwest: Thanks!

Congratulations to those accepted and good luck to the interviewees!!!! YOU GOT THIS.
Has anyone heard from Herron, Hope, or Michigan, yet?
I applied to Michigan and UCSB as well, but have not heard anything...esp. from Mich (though, I know their interviews are supposed to be mid-this month, so not feeling confident about that school)...I have seen a couple people get accepted to UCSB, as well as rejected, back around 01/20-23...so, my guess is, we are still in the running for "Second Round". Wish us luck!
And, again, congrats to the Yale people for interviews! Hope you guys kill it.
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, Michigan is having interviews on Feb. 10 and 17. They sent out invitations a litte over a week ago. Best of luck!

The portfolio is more important. The fact that your background is in science doesn't hurt (and in some cases might help you stand out). Some schools require you to have a BA in Art or a BFA but most programs will take applicants in any background, provided they have a good portfolio.
